ABOUT LISBON |
| |
Lisbon,
the capital of Portugal since it's conquest from the Moors in
1147, is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of history.
Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and cool
summers freshened by a breeze blowing in from the Atlantic,
it is a city which fascinates and draws tourists in. Full of
mystery and enchantment it awakens the senses with beauty of
its old palaces, narrow streets, and historic buildings. |

Marqués de Pombal
Square
The
Marqués de Pombal Square is located
between the Liberty Avenue and Eduardo VII garden. In the
center of this square rises the splendid monument to Pombal,
the man who was in charge of Lisbon's reconstruction after
the 1755 earthquake. A beautiful monument where the marquis
stands on top of the column with his hand on a lion (symbol
of power). |

Padrao dos Descobrimentos
The Monument to the Discoveries
is a 52m high slab of concrete, located next to the River Tagus in the Belém district of Lisbon.
It was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the
death of Henry the Navigator.
The monument is carved into
the shape of the prow of a ship in which stands a statue of
Henry the Navigator (looking out over the river), as well as
statues of various explorers, cartographers, artists and
missionaries. Also included is a statue of Luís de Camoes,
the poet and recorder of the discoveries, whose tomb is in
the nearby Jerónimo's Monastery. |

Belém Tower
Belém Tower was built in the
Age of the Discoveries (when defending the city was of
paramont importance) in tribute to the patron saint of the
city, Saint Vicente. Built between 1515 and 1520, the Manueline-style tower is Portugal's classic landmark and
often serves as a symbol of the country and it stands on or
near the spot where the caravels once set out across the
sea. In order to enhance Lisbon´s defense, King Joao II drew
up a plan that consisted of forming a three-fortress-defense
on the Tagus´s estuary. |

Sao Jorge
Castle
Locals speak of Sao Jorge Castle as the cradle of their city, and it
might have been where the Portuguese capital began. It's
occupation is believed to have predated the Romans -- the
hilltop was used as a fortress to guard the Tagus and its
settlement below. Beginning in the 5th century A.D., the
site was a visigothic fortification; it fell to the Saracens
in the early 8th century. Many of the existing walls were
built during the centuries of Moorish domination. The
Moors held power until 1147, the year Alfonso Henríques
chased them out and extended his kingdom south. |
