LOCATION AND HISTORY

Lake GardaLake Garda is surrounded by beaches and winding roads that allow you to take in the beautiful scenery with its perfumed flowers and captivating colours.
The climate is sweet and temperate with luxurious vegetation that is reminiscent of the Mediterranean coasts.
Numerous tourist places surround the lake with their little harbours, tiny colourful houses, gorgeous mansions and gardens.
Peschiera del Garda is one of the most strategic and panoramic places of the lake, where in the prehistory stood up a piles- village. Later Peschiera is the ancient “Arilica” of the Roman Empire, how Plinio Il Vecchio describes it. The Byzantines, the Longobards, the Scaliger family, Carlo Magno and Berengario, they all built castles around here. In the XII c. Peschiera obtained the complete autonomy of a free commune, but it could not defend itself from the siege of Federico Barbarossa. In the following centuries it passed through the Visconti and Venetian supremacies and afterwards through the Napoleon’s and Austrian dominions. With the unity of Italy, the tormenting period of political and economical fights and disputes finally got to the end for Peschiera as well.
Its historical centre preserves the main part of the puissant city fortification walls, realized between the 1553 and the 1556 by Guidobaldo della Rovere.
The town with its alluring shops stands at the South-Eastern part of Lake Garda, exactly where the lake water flows down into the river Mincio. The historical town centre is very interesting standing inside a huge star shaped fortress completely surrounded by a moat.
In the narrow streets of the town centre there are shops and bars. Monday is market day. You will feel the sensation of being in Italy, as you wander through this traditional Italian market with its street traders and alluring scents of fresh market products. The wines produced in this area include the very famous Lugana, a white wine of excellent quality, whose production has been extended outside Peschiera through Brescia territory, together with another sparkling wine that has already obtained excellent quality results.
We are writing about Lugana, as legends have it this wine flowed from a fountain built in Peschiera, in celebration of the first stay of king Charles V, coming back from his coronation in Bologna in 1530.
The Emperor arrived in Peschiera on 20th April with a huge retinue of soldiers, horses and carts. The town triumphantly welcomed him as he took lodgings with the local Governor.
Today Peschiera is no longer the place solely for Princes, Kings and Emperors, but it is a town visited by cosmopolitan tourists, who love spending time on the shores of the most beautiful European lake. The days amble along offering quiet relaxation not only during the Summer season but as a destination for all seasons.
The town is well located for visitors wishing to explore cities of art, such as Verona, Venice, Milan and Mantua. Mantua can be reached through the Mincio Valley, of which Peschiera is the natural gateway for people who wish to visit from the lake.
The ancient poet Dante refers to the town of Peschiera in his famous XX “Canto” of the poem “Inferno”:
“Siede Peschiera bello e forte arnese da fronteggiar bresciani e bergamaschi, ove la riva intorno più discese.
Ivi convien che tutto quanto caschi ciò che ‘n grambo a Benaco star non pò e fassi fiume giù pè verdi paschi.
Tosto che l’acqua a correr mette cò non più Benaco, ma Mincio si chiama fino a Governalo ove cade in Po”.
