ABOUT TRIESTE

Trieste - Italy

Trieste is a beautiful and extraordinary city, anchored to a past which it can not forget. Is an Italian port city located in the northeastern part of Italy on the border with Slovenia, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste at the corner of the Adriatic Sea. At one time a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste was united with the rest of Italy after the first world war. In fact, during its long and tumultuous history, the city has had extensive contacts with different ethnic groups, including French, Austrian and Slavic. This has given the town a cosmopolitan quality not found in other Italian cities, and has contributed to its unique character. Trieste is often overlooked by many tourists in favour of its better known sister city of Venice, but for those looking for a relaxing "off the well-beaten path" destination in Italy, the city offers many charms.

Grotta Gigante:
In close proximity to Trieste is the famous Grotta Gigante, the world's largest accessible cave open to the public. This huge   cave is over 100 meters high, 300 meters long and about 70 meters wide, and is large enough to contain the entire basilica of Saint Peter inside.

Revoltella Museum:
Once the 19th century house of Baron Pasquale Revoltella,   the   Revoltella Museum contains an excellent gallery of  modern   art and a  roof   top  terrace offering  a  splendid sweeping view of the city.

Miramare Castle:
The Miramare castle was constructed in the mid-1800s for Archduke maximilian of Habsburg, and was his home until he left to become Emperor of Mexico. Set in 22 hectares of  beautiful grounds, the castle is now a popular museum and park. Visitors can visit    several  rooms,  all of  which  contain the    original   furniture   commissioned   by   Maximilian.
