Sicily, Italy, population
over 5 million, is the largest island in the Mediterranean
and is separated from the "toe" to Italy by the Strait of
Messina. Sicily is very mountainous, including the active
volcano, Mount Etna which soars to over 11 thousand feet
(3.4 thousand meters) near the east coast. Sicily, one of
the first inhabited regions of Italy, is among the most
inhabited islands in the Mediterranean. The island is famous
for art, archeology, history and beautiful mountains and
Mediterranean Sea scenery. Archimedes taught and Saint Paul
preached in Sicily. Overseas flights land directly in
Palermo. Visitors enjoy Sicily's attractive beaches, Greek
temples, amphitheatres, and Roman architecture. Real
Sicilians are friendly and their cuisine is fantastic. |
