About Sicily
hotel a'pinnata

sicily hotel a'pinnata

Sicily, Italy, population over 5 million, is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is separated from the "toe" to Italy by the Strait of Messina. Sicily is very mountainous, including the active volcano, Mount Etna which soars to over 11 thousand feet (3.4 thousand meters) near the east coast. Sicily, one of the first inhabited regions of Italy, is among the most inhabited islands in the Mediterranean. The island is famous for art, archeology, history and beautiful mountains and Mediterranean Sea scenery. Archimedes taught and Saint Paul preached in Sicily. Overseas flights land directly in Palermo. Visitors enjoy Sicily's attractive beaches, Greek temples, amphitheatres, and Roman architecture. Real Sicilians are friendly and their cuisine is fantastic.

The islands are very different and have their own ambience. Lipari is the largest and most central island, making it the touristiest island. Visitors go to Lipari-city (atmospheric and picturesque, despite the crowds) or search for one of the beautiful bays on the east coast for a cooling dip in the azure sea.

Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands. It has about 11,000 inhabitants, the majority live in the town of Lipari. The island has a long history and has been inhabited since the 5th millennium BC. The Romans and the fascist regime of Mussolini used it as a place of exile. The Greeks, Byzantines, Saracens and Normans have all left their mark here. The characteristic town of Lipari is fun to visit. There are some interesting squares, churches, monuments and museums to be found here.

The volcanic Salina is the second largest island of the Aeolian archipelago. Salina is the greenest island and less touristy than Lipari. The volcano is extinct but has left its mark, which is reflected in the green hills. The Fossa delle Felci with its 969 meters is the highest mountain of the Aeolian Islands. If you have enough energy for the two-hour climb to the summit of the Aeolian Islands, you will be rewarded with the most amazing views you ever can imagine. Salina is the perfect location for lovers of the sea and water sports.

is the most active volcano in the world. Under the guidance it is possible to climb the volcano. It may sound dangerous, but just before sunset is the best time to go up it. When it becomes dark, you will be treated a fantastic fire show.

is especially visited for the healing sulphur baths. But also the volcano Vulcano of 500 metres high is special. The latest eruption was at the end of the 19th century.

The most idyllic island is Panarea. If you discover this island by foot (there is hardly motorised traffic), you can enjoy the beautiful landscape with the characteristic white-blue houses.

Alicudi is one of the smallest islands of the Aeolian archipelago. About 100 people live on this steep island. Despite the fact that the island is just two by three kilometres long, the highest mountain (the Filo dell’Arpa) is still 675 metres high.

The small island Filicudi is a little bigger and flatter than Alicudi. Still you can also find five old craters here, as well as three small villages.

Ristorante Filippino

The authentic taste of the Mediterranean. Filipino is a modern and functional restaurant, divided into two rooms and a large, renovated air-conditioned terrace.
The specialties offered are mainly related to seafood: regional dishes based on fresh fish caught daily, together with raw materials of the island such as vegetables and oils which enhance the flavor.
