- Only at a few kilometers from the hotel you can visit the park of Fiumara d’Arte, the biggest Regional museum of contemporary sculptures in Europe. The park, made by Antonio Presti, consists of an unusual attempt at exhibiting contemporary sculpture in a kind of open-air museum, that takes advantage of the natural landscape to arrive at a symbiosis of art and nature and provides interested visitors an opportunity of exploring secluded and off-the-beaten-track spots. The monumental sculptures have been realized by international artists: Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Tano Festa, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Paolo Schiavocampo, Antonio Di Palma and many others. A very pleasant art walk amidst the Sicilian wild and picturesque nature.

ABOUT THE REGION

Founded by the Greeks in the 8th Century BC, Sicily was an important cultural centre until its fertile plains became the “bread basket” of the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome, many peoples—the Arabs, Normans, Germans, Spanish, and French—occupied Sicily until 1861 when it became part of Italy. It is the largest island in the Mediterranean basin. Around it lies a number of smaller islands but  Sicily itself boasts around 1.000 Km of coastline, mostly rocky in the north and sandy in the south. The landscape is varied, prevalently mountains and hilly, but with an expanse of plains around Catania. In the eastern part of the island Mount Etna (about 3.330 m) is Sicily's highest mountain, the whole of which is a protected area within a national park. Still active, it is the biggest volcano in Europe. Palermo and  Messina  are important cities in this island and they are not far away from the hotel. Messina is a charming city that lies on the far north-eastern side, on the lower slopes of the Peloritani Mountains. As the result of a major earthquake in 1908 and repeated bombing during World War II, it is basically a 20th Century city with few intact monuments. You should visit the Duomo, which was almost entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1908, is a Norman-style cathedral with a façade featuring one-light windows and a small rose window at the centre. Make sure you visit the Piazza del Duomo at noon to see the world's largest astronomical clock (orologio astronomico) come to life with its mechanical figures and music. It has a 60-foot bell-tower and dates back to 1933 when it was built in Strasbourg.
