*** ABOUT LINDOS *** |
|
|
Lindos,
47 km from the city of Rhodes, is the major tourist
attraction. The village has perfectly preserved its
traditional character, with pebble-covered streets and
whitewashed houses clustered amphitheatrically around the
foot of a steep rock with the acropolis, with its Doric
Temple of Athena on its top.
Through the main gate discern the ruins of the Knight’s
Lodge and the Byzantine church of St. John. Outside the
Doric stoa the prow of a Lindian Hellenistic trireme has
been carved in a rock. Crossing the Doric Stoa (5th century
BC) with its 42 columns and climbing the majestic staircase
to higher terrace with Propylaean ruins (5th century BC),
the sanctuary of Lindian Athena, with its elegant bi-prostyle
temple on the edge of the cliff (4th century) appears. Ruins
of an ancient theatre have been found in the slope of the
Acropolis. The ancient Acropolis was then built into a
castle.

Lindos together with two other powerful Doric city – states,
Ialysos and Kameiros, played a leading role in the history
of the island.
On the other side of the village there is a beautiful inlet,
known as the “Little Harbour of the Apostle Paul”. Here,
according to tradition the Apostle Paul preached
Christianity to the Rhodians.
Lindos boast a main sandy beach, the nearby smaller Pallas
beach and on the other side of the village, Sta. Pauls Bay.
This marvellous place is of great interesting both for its
natural beauty and for its archaeological treasures. |
