HISTORY |
|
|
|
|
|
|

The Ascoli Piceno historical archive contains a description
dating back to 1300 of “a castle on the Lama stream”, built
as a watch tower at the centre of vast fiefdoms due to its
strategic defensive position with 360° visibility from the
Sibillini Mountains to the Adriatic Sea. The architecture of
the Borgo has left its signs over the course of seven
centuries. The ancient castle crypt, today the kitchen in
the old residence, has a typically 15th century arched
design; the Oratory dedicated to San Pancrazio, was built at
the end of the 16th century, whilst the façade of the
historic house was wholly added between the end of the 17th
and the beginning of the 18th century. The San Pancrazio
cottage dates back to the early 17th century and gradually
grew to its present size. It was designed as a dwelling for
the peasants who worked on the estate. It was completely
restored in recent years thus completing the Borgo, and it
now contains five apartments with fine period furnishings, a
swimming pool in the garden, which is next to the gym and
the sauna. |

HISTORIC GARDENS
|
|
|
|
|
 |
In 1870 the noble Carfratelli
Seghetti family decided to leave an elegant and cultivated
botanical imprint on what had become their summer residence,
and they engaged an outstanding European personality: the
great German landscape architect Ludwig Winter. At that time
he was well-known for his work on the garden of Villa La
Mortola at Ventimiglia (now a national botanical garden)
owned by the English Hanbury brothers. He was also a great
lover of exotic plants. The Seghetti Panichi Historic
Gardens, which he designed, is a rare example of what one
could call “a moved landscape”, with exotic palms and
terraced citrus trees which are typical of the Ligurian
landscape. To plant a garden of such dimensions and
particularly of such botanical importance required an
enormous intellectual and economic commitment. Indeed, there
are still local records of the processions of ox-drawn carts
that transported the fresh soil from the river banks.
The complex water system and
the snaking terra cotta channels for rain water drainage are
still visible today. Among the various examples of palm tree
there are large groups of Chamaerops humilis and
Washingtonia filifera, with their cascades of egg-shaped
fruit, Brahea dulcis, with Cordyline australis, at whose
feet are found the white bellflowers of Yucca gloriosa and
groups of Cordyline australis, with two rare Yubea
spectabilis. Of significant interest are also the other
trees, some of which are typical to the Marches countryside,
such as copper beeches and oaks. One oak, known as ‘The
Cathedral’ for the breadth of its trunk and its foliage, is
home to hundreds of birds in its branches. Other important
trees include a number of magnolias, holm oaks, linden
trees, two Ginkgo bilobas, a splendid example of
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana and another of Cycas revolute.
Behind, in the centre of a soft chrysoprase pond, stands a
delicate travertine statue of Venus and Love hand in hand,
as if to suggest the joining of beauty and nature. As in all
of Winter’s gardens there is a little spot devoted to
meditation: the hermitage, a place of internalisation for
every visitor, who, whilst appreciating the peace and
elegance of the garden, wishes to reflect more carefully on
the deep union nexus man and nature, between life of Being
and vegetative life. The Seghetti Panichi Historic Gardens
is part of the national circuit of ‘Great Italian Gardens’
and of the extremely well-known French association Fous de
Palmiers.
The Kitchen Garden
The Fruit and Vegetable
Gardens and the Garden of the Simple are two beating hearts
in the Historic Gardens. Mens sana in corpore sano. We have
always known that the psychological and physical wellbeing
of the human being is also in part the result of the food he
eats, thus, the quality and genuineness of the produce of
the earth. These two kitchen gardens enable us to offer our
guests tasty and natural ingredients all year round.
San Pancrazio Garden
Recently planted, this Garden
surrounds the San Pancrazio Cottage, which was once part of
the Family agricultural estate. Today this is a beautiful
green space bounding the southern entrance of the Borgo. It
is planted with lavender, rosemary and thyme bushes typical
of the Mediterranean area. The paths are shaped with olive
trees - which characterize Le Marche landscape - and
laurels, forming green-shaded barriers to protect the
privacy of the Borgo. Lawns are coloured in flowerbeds of
intense red “Seville roses”, while pale pink “Clair Matin”
roses cover the Reception walls. Light salmon coloured
oleanders together with “Fairy Queen” and “Sea-foam” roses
surround and embellish the swimming-pool area; wild broom
bushes garnish the garden. All these elements form a
delicate coloured palette brightening up the grounds. A
young oak and a group of palm trees transplanted from the
Historic Gardens, complete the landscape giving a sense of
continuity between these two green natural spaces of the
Borgo. |
