In Roman times known
as Aponas, Abano Terme has been famous for its thermal cures for
centuries. Frequented by nobility throughout the ages up to the
20th century, Abano is a sophisticated little town. The centre
is pedestrianised, and it is a joy to meander through its
streets with their excellent shops and restaurants. Surrounded
by the Euganean Hills with their many medieval villages and
castles, the air here is as pure as it was 2000 years ago! The
flora in the hills is stunning.
According to Roman tradition, the waters were dedicated to a
female divinity, maybe a healing goddess, the lady of nature,
the goddess that determines the flow of life. The name is Retia
and this is the principle name, handed down to us from the
inscriptions.
Abano Thermal spas
constitutes the biggest and most ancient thermal establishment
in Europe. Archaeological excavations show that the area was
inhabited by Paleovenitian populations. |
