In the changing times

13TH CENTURYHistorical drawing of the former knight's castle, today Wernberg Castle

  • 1280  First documented mention of Wernberg Castle. Conrad the Paulsdorfer acquires the castle of two noble Luiginbergern.
  • 1281  The castle passes into the possession of the ancient and daring family of the Nothaft family. A branch of this knight family names later to the place Wernberg.
  • 1284  Burggraf Friedrich of Nuremberg is the proud owner of the castle, but soon falls back to the Nothafts.

14TH CENTURYView over the fields and half festivals with surrounding farms

  • 1367  A striking date for the history of the castle is the 9th of March 1367. On this day Heinrich Nothaft of Wernberg received his free feasts from the crown of Bohemia to the right man's fief. Emperor Charles IV takes Wernberg as a Bohemian fief in his protection and umbrella.
  • 1381  On the 29th of November Hans der Nothaft and his wife Beatrix sell half the feasts to their nephews: Heinrich, Albert and Hans Nothaft.

15TH CENTURYcourtyard of Burg Wernberg, Wernberg-Köblitz, Bavaria

  • 1401  Heinrich Nothaft - now also known as Henry the Rich - built a chapel in the feast, which is consecrated as the St. George Chapel.
  • 1407  Heinrich Nothaft von Wernberg (judge in Nabburg 1397-1434) receives on August 23 from King Rupprecht the jail with stick and gallows.
  • 1430  Hussite invasions in the Upper Palatinate, which are destroyed three years later with the help of Nothafts.

16TH CENTURYExterior: Wernberg Castle, Wernberg-Köblitz, Bavaria

  • 1509  Death of Henry III. Nothaft. On December 28, the castle will be sold to Georg Wiespeck at Velburg, the estate of his hereditary mayor.
  • 1530  His son Hans Adam continues to sell the castle: to the Landgrave Johann IV von Leuchtenberg.
  • 1560  Landgrave Ludwig Heinrich gives the castle Wernberg a coat of arms seal.

17TH CENTURYview of the courtyard of Burg Wernberg, Bavaria

  • 1646  On the 1st of November, Max Adam dies as the last landgrave of Leuchtenberg. Bohemia invades Wernberg as a fief and gives the rule to Count Khevenhüller. This sold the restored castle to the Elector Maximilian of Bavaria.
  • 1650  Maximilian of Bavaria passes Castle Wernberg together with Leuchtenberg to his son Max Philipp. After his death Wernberg should fall back to Bayern, but the emperor pulls them in and gives them to Count Leopold von Lamberg.

18TH CENTURYside view: Burg Wernberg with drawbridge

  • 1714  The castle now falls back to Bavaria and is set up as the Pfalzamt, which comprises approx. 25 square kilometers and approx. 2,000 inhabitants. The Electoral Court Judge and Keeper Wolf Clement Peter zu Fernau on Offenstetten moves in on the feast.
  • 1741  During the Austrian War of Succession until 1745, Wernberg Castle is used as a military camp.

19TH CENTURYBurg Wernberg in the 19th century

  • 1803  The Pflegamt is dissolved and united with the regional court Nabburg. The castle becomes a detention center, which does not do her any good: she falls to pieces.
  • 1871  The historical association of the Upper Palatinate decides after a request of the government for the preservation of castle Wernberg. The government still hesitates with financial support.
  • 1873  On April 28, the Bavarian Ministry of Finance sold the castle for 1,000 gulden to the captain of Peritzhoff. He receives the condition to obtain the memorable parts of the building.
  • 1891  On October 20, his widow Amanda von Peritzhoff takes over Wernberg Castle.
  • 1892  On November 21, Amanda von Peritzhoff sells the castle to the privateer Hans Zapf from Murnau.
  • 1893  August Boshart, major from Brussels, buys the castle and can not keep it for financial reasons - the foreclosure sale follows.
  • 1894  Major aD and landowner Otto Freiherr von Brencken is the new owner. After his death in 1915, the castle remains in the possession of the widow and three daughters.

20TH CENTURYExterior: Wernberg Castle, Wernberg-Köblitz, Bavaria

  • 1920  Count Schall-Riaucour acquires the castle, rebuilt the eastern part and restored the buildings.
  • 1992  The castle Wernberg passes into the possession of the market town Wernberg and is built together with the company Conrad Electronic to the hotel with restaurant enterprise. The Conrad family leases the castle for 99 years.
  • 1998  The time has come: The castle opens. After six years of planning, renovation and restoration, she is already in the top 100 of the best hotels in Germany in the first year.
