Although the canals of Venezia
are surely a tourist attraction, they are not just a tourist attraction. On
the island city there are no cars, you either walk or take a boat. The
canals of the city are its streets, and you will find the same things on the
canals that you find on streets anywhere; taxis, buses, the milk man, the
mail man, even an ambulance on an emergency run. During rush hour the canals
are clogged with buses and work boats, competing for space with the gondolas
that are so popular with tourists.
For the most part, the view along the canal is little changed over the last
several hundred years. The buildings, and the sweeping view of the canal are
not much different now than they were 400 years ago, except for the boats
and other trappings of modern life. |
