ABOUT ATHENS |
|
|
|
In Athens, the capital of
Greece, past, present, and future coexist in breathtaking
harmony. The Doric columns of the Parthenon stunningly complement the
modern skyline of the city that lies at the foot of the
sacred rock of the Acropolis. The Metro’s state-of the- art
technology connects old and new, bridging the gap between
the 5th -century- B.C. Monuments and the 21st-century center of commerce. The
age-old and the brand-new, coexist beautifully in Europe’s
oldest capital.
With thousands of years of history and mythology, Athens,
named for the olive-tree-loving Athena (goddess of wisdom),
is the natural starting point of any visit to Greece.
Sites
of interest
Athens also features several recent sites. A visit to
stately 19th -century buildings such as the Panathenaikon
Stadium, the University of Athens, the Academy of Athens,
the Zappion Hall and the Iliou Melathron Mansion should be
included in every itinerary.
For most stunning views of the city a visit to Lykavitos
Hill in central Athens will compensate the most demanding.
The hilltop with the picturesque St. George Church can be
reached either by car or by funicular.
Not to be missed is a visit to Piraeus, the port town of
Athens. Located on a peninsula near central Athens, it
features the picturesque Mikrolimano fishing harbour, the
busy commercial port as well as many shops and a Sunday flea
market.
Shopping
Athens is a city full of pleasant surprises for the shopper
who is looking for unique purchases and good bargains. Gold
and silver jewellery is a major area of interest. The
numerous jewellery shops that you can find in the areas of
Syntagma and Kolonaki carry a wide selection of museum
reproductions of ancient Greek pieces of jewellery as well
as traditional and fashionable ones.
Ermou street is the most fashionable street in Athens for
shopping. Here you can find almost everything from clothing
to jewellery .
One of Athens' most popular shopping areas is Kolonaki where
some of the trendiest boutiques in the city are found
selling clothes by top Greek designers, shoes and leather
goods, toys, antique furniture jewellery, etc.
Not to be missed is a visit to Monastiraki. The street
vendors, the various antique shops and second-hand bookshops
as well as leather and shoe shops create a unique atmosphere
that should be experienced. |
