"A hotel situated on a small hill overlooking the countryside. Quite a distance from the coast : about ½ hour by car.
The property has been superbly renovated whilst retaining its original charm. We had a castle room which is one of the more expensive rooms. It was very romantic just like the website photos although some of the furnishings by the window have faded from the sun. All the furnishings were in keeping with the building. Dark wood furniture etc. The bathroom is in the bedroom area behind a screen. The toilet was separate. The room was a very good size and overall very comfortable. The air conditioning worked well in a very hot July. Flies were a problem being inland and the windows had to be kept shut. The view was however excellent.
We stayed 3 nights and ate in the hotel every night. Both the food and the service were excellent. The restaurant is also used by locals and booking is recommended at night to get your required time. The wine selection was interesting and very good. Food presentation, style and quality were superb.
We ate out on the patio area. This was very romantic having a candle lit dinner watching the sun go down over the distant mountains. It will be a long time before this is surpassed.
There is a nice swimming pool. A little cold as unheated. There were sufficient chairs to relax with a good drinks and lunchtime snacks service. It was also possible to generally find some shade for those who need it.
It is possible to watch DVD’s if you are so inclined. These are available from reception. A small deposit was required.
There are some rooms in the garden (Garden Rooms). These are built into the side of the hill. More are planned I understand. These are unobtrusive and do not detract from the wonderful ambience of the place.
A word of warning. There are many steps in the property both inside and out. It is not possible to go from the Castle Rooms to the dining room without going outside down steps. There is a lift down to the Garden Rooms, again outside, but there is no lift in the hotel. People with poor mobility need to take care.
Overall I cannot think of a bad comment and we would both return tomorrow. Extremely highly regarded and thoroughly recommended. One of the best small hotels I have come across.
Next time you go to Barcelona take an extra few days and go here you will not be disappointed."

"My husband and I fully recommend the Hotel Castell d'Emporda.Our garden room was spacious and tastefully furnished, the views to the snow-clad Pyrenees were memorable, and the staff helpful and English-speaking. We particularly appreciated all the good signage in the neighboring town of La Bisbal to the castle. The highpoint however were the dinners, four star and creative, among the best we had in Spain."

"We had a lovely time at Castell D'emporda. Very scenic and very calm setting. The rooms were lovely. Service was excellent.
Our only complaint would be about the menu...the food was really excellent...beautifully presented etc., however the menu was the same for the 3 or 4 nights we spent there, and in fact we went out after eating in the restaurant twice, just for variety. There were many good restaurants in the area anyway, so we probably would have sampled others, but it was a bit surprising that there was no variation in the hotel menu.
Apart from that we would highly recommend the hotel for a very nice break."

"We did stay in the castle and could well do the same again when we are in the area. We found the suite very good and the general ambience exactly what we desired. The food and service in the restaurant were also of the high standard we expected (although the choice of menu for Dinner was a little strange - Steak Tartare with French Fries????!). However we found that Reception personnel were not what we had hoped for. Efficient, but not at all friendly or welcoming, and not what we had travelled from the USA for! My wife used the word "Cold" to describe the reception we received, and this continued throughout our stay.
But as I say, we shall probably stay there again."
