Chianti

In the Chianti, the heart of the charming Tuscan countryside, between Siena and Arezzo.

The Castelletto di Montebenichi stands atop a hill in the south east Chianti, in Valdambra a place that has amazingly preserved the beauty and genuine aspects of its land. The small hamlet that surrounds the castle is Montebenichi, halfway between Arezzo and Siena. This is an excellent starting point for discovering the artistic, natural and food and wine wonders of central Tuscany.

Siena, Arezzo, San Gimignano, Cortona, Montalcino, Val d'Orcia, Assisi, Chianti wineries.

From Montebenichi, Chianti road tracks wind around woods, olive groves and vineyards and take you to medieval villages and imposing castles.

Along the roads wineries that offer guided tours with tasting of wine, oil and other local produce. If you are wine enthusiasts, why not to travel south west to Montalcino, a well-known area for its important Brunello wine, or south east to Montepulciano where it is possible to taste the no less well known Vino Nobile?

With an easy drive you can reach many cities of art such as Siena, Arezzo, San Gimignano, Volterra, Monteriggioni and Cortona.

Slightly south of Montebenichi, the "val d'Orcia" and the land of the "Crete Senesi" offer extraordinary, unique views.

In about an hour you can reach Florence, or, in Umbria, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto

Sport: pool and gym. Trekking in the woods, biking and/or horse riding. For the bold ones: polo games and balloon flights. Hunting when possible.

Wellness: massage, sauna, jacuzzi mini-pool in the park. Visit to the spa at the hot springs of "rapolano terme" in the vicinity.

Culture: trips to the cities of art in the area. Visits to the countless castles, hamlets, churches.festival and events: the horse race (palio) in siena (july 2nd and august 16th), the "giostra del saracino" in arezzo (first sunday of september), countless local events to be checked on the web.

Food and wine: visits to wineries tasting wines, oils and local products in the chianti or in montalcino (brunello wine) or in montepulciano (vino nobile). Tasting of cheese such as "pecorino di pienza" or enjoying truffles in val d'orcia. Cooking classes of traditional tuscan dishes.

Shopping: local crafts (painted majolica, jewels, leather goods). Prada outlet store. Outlets centers such as "the mall" (armani, gucci, ferragamo, etc) and the "valdichiana outlet village". The first weekend of each month the antiques fair in arezzo, the largest in italy.

The name of this town points to Etruscan-Roman origins, but it was not until the Mediaeval period that it enjoyed some degree of importance with the building of a castle to control the Ambra Valley. Given its strategic position on the main communication link between Valdarno and Siena, a well populated and industrious centre grew up round the original military post.
