Spoleto
is a small burg with an eminent heritage. The
town has Umbrian origins, was ruled by the
Romans and, at the peak of its influence, became
the capital of the Lombard Duchy. It later came
under the control of the Church, which
commissioned the construction of the famous
Fortress of Albornoz.
When it defied the union of the Italian State,
Spoleto was relegated into the role of a minor
centre and lived reminiscing its past until
maestro Giancarlo Menotti founded the famous
Festival of the Two Worlds, which re-established
the town’s discreet and refined appeal and
turned it into a cultural and worldly centre of
international stature.
Spoleto is filled with Umbrian, Roman, Medieval,
and Renaissance monuments and boasts an
extensive historical centre where the influences
of the various centuries blend in a harmonious
whole. Perhaps this is because each century
offered the town only the best it had to offer,
clearly defined and devoid of exaggeration.
