ABOUT LAURO |
 |
The Lauro valley is well connected to
the area which is the centre of the Marian cult in the Mezzogiorno
(the southern part of Italy), i.e. the sanctuaries of Pompei,
Madonna dell’Arco and Montevergine, all within a range of 40
kilometres. Lesser known but of local interest are many sanctuaries,
the destination of pilgrimages and the focus of intense worship on
the part of the inhabitants of the region. Among them are the
Madonna del Carpinello (of the hornbeam or ironwood tree) at
Visciano; Saint Filomena at Mugnano del Cardinale; Madonna delle
Galline (of the hens) at Pagani; Madonna dei Bagni (of the baths) at
Angri; Madonna dell’Avvocata at Maiori, Madonna del Castello at
Somma Vesuviana; Madonna della Foce at Sarno; Materdomini at Nocera,
etc.. Thus Lauro and its environs are situated in a key position to
reach these areas of maximum spiritual interest in the Mezzogiorno.
They are actually on the routes of the shrines seekers from Naples
and its sister cities along the Bay of Naples, who are headed for
Montevergine. |
