THE REGION |

|

LORO CIUFFENNA
It’s a medieval village (328 asl) in the Arno Valley.
Built in the rocks of the Ciuffenna torrent (a Arno river’s
affluent) is one of the most suggestive places of this area.
The historic center is a maze of small streets and alleys,
with an especially fascinating Romanesque bridge over the
Ciuffenna. From the bridge one can admire the ancient stone
mill, still perfectly functional today, used for grinding
chestnuts and cereals. Here man’s ingenuity harnessing a
force of nature has combined to produce a suggestive scene,
unique also because of the musical roar – sometimes soft,
sometimes, thunderous – of the Ciuffenna waterfall.
The Palazzo Comunale holds the works of the contemporary local artist Venturino Venturi. In the museum,
entirely dedicated to this artist from Loro, his drawings,
paintings and sculptures are permanently exhibited. Realised
by means of many techniques and with various materials,
including wood, iron, cemento ceramics and stone, they are
the result of fifty years of intense activity.
VALDARNO VALLEY
Valdarno is the valley that unwinds along the bed of the
Arno river, between the impressive Pratomagno massif and the
Chianti hills. The territory is crossed by the Setteponti
road. Harmonically integrated with the rural environment it
is the road of the Roman churches and abbeys; the road
offers the opportunity of a trip from Earth to Paradise,
where spiritual and artistic interest meet with memories of
Rome and the Renaissance, with its small historical centres
amongst the hills.
The Setteponti road begins near Arezzo- at the hamlet of
Ponte a Buriano, referring to the present bridge which was
constructed in 1277.- comes to Loro Ciuffenna and ends up to
Fiesole.
The name of the road may have derived from the seven arches
of the bridge (which is the background of one of Leonardo da
Vinci’s masterpieces “The Mona Lisa-La Gioconda”).
The valley below is easily reachable by an excellent network
of provincial and secondary roads- along which one finds
ancient villages, small castles and Romanesque churches. The
area is studded with olive trees, grapevines, and, a
characteristic feature of landscape, the geolocical
formation of cliffs, known as the “Balze”.
THE PROTECTED AREA OF “LE BALZE” (CRAGS)
The Balze are a fairytale landscape. Sculped by water and
wind over hundred of millions of year, the Valdarno crags
are a unique and original geological phenomenon in Italy.
Many experts retain that the shapes and forms of the
Valdarno crags are represented in Leonardo da Vinci’s
paintings (The Madonna of Rocks) and it is likewise for
other masters of the Renaissance, such as Masaccio and Beato
Angelico. |

THE OTHER TUSCANY … NOT TO LOOSE |
|
|
|
|
|
There is a part of Tuscany which is not yet worldwide known;
it is a not touristy area and it is kept secret by deep
Tuscany connoisseurs. This is the Tuscany of Parish Church
at Gropina, Pratomagno massif, Valley of Hell and the Oasis
of Bandella.
PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT PETER IN GROPINA
It is the most significant example of Romanesque
architecture in the territory of Arezzo.
It owes its absolute singularity not only to the Roman
remains discovered in the course of excavations carried out
in the immediate surroundings, but also to those still
visible underneath the church which reveal traces of two
previous churches, the first built between the 5th and 6th
centuries a.C. and the second in the Longobard period
(8th/9th centuries).
The present construction dates from the end of the 12th
century and the beginning of the 13th and it is one of the
purest examples of classical romanesque architecture.
PRATOMAGNO MOUNTAIN
The Pratomagno is geographically that part of the Appenines
which divides the Valdarno from the Casentino, on the slopes
of which the road of Setteponti originated and the Pieve di
Gropina was built. This part of Tuscany is primarily known
as a green country area to go to for relaxation, in order to
escape the summer heat or to find snow in winter, or, in
autumn, to go to for walks in colourful forests of chestnuts
which make us think to paradise.
It is 1591 meters a.s.l. and owes part of its beauty to the
numerous small mountain villages which have sprung us on its
slopes.
It is an ideal place for long hikes-on foot, mountain bike
or on horseback.
The Pratomagno offers tourists wanting a vacation immersed
in nature a whole series of profoundly Tuscan sensations:
from vast panorams they can admire from its crest (where a
big iron cross has been placed, known as “Croce del
Pratomagno”) to the pleasure of walking on soft, grassy
meadows, and to exceptional experience of swimming in the
bends of the Ciuffenna river.
The mountain is rich in archaeology and legends, in medieval
castles and stories of poverty, and also in traditional
Tuscan products. The chestnut flour is one: not only you can
enjoy its taste, you can see the entire production cycle
from the tree to the kitchen.
THE VALLEY OF HELL AND THE OASIS OF BANDELLA
The Valley of Hell is like a secret, it is not where one
would expect it to be; next to the motorway and the railway
alongside the river Arno.
Nevertheless it’s a very important “humid area”, which
extends for tens of hectares and its populated by flocks of
herons, magpies, Italian knights and other migrating birds.
The lake in the Oasis of Bandella was formed following the
construction of the dam, in 1956, for the production of
electrical energy, with the refilling of the valley and
transformation into lacustrine area with its progressive re-naturalisation
and nowadays has become an area that need protection and
control as a richly bio-diverse environment.
