Plaça de Catalunya (500 Mts.)
Start your tour from Plaça Catalunya and take Les Rambles (or Las
Ramblas in Spanish) towards the sea. On the right, you'll find Raval
district with its museums, art galleries and notorious red-light area,
Barri Xines. On your left, the medieval Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) is
home to the cathedral, peaceful Plaça del Pi, art galleries and lots of
cafes serving delicious hot chocolate. If you go even further left,
across busy Via Laietana, you'll come to Born market, in up-and-coming
La Ribera district. This trendy neighbourhood is also home to graceful
Santa Maria del Mar Church and the impressive Museu Picasso.
Museu Picaso (900
Mts.)
Two old palaces on a medieval street have been converted into this
museum housing works by Pablo Picasso, who donated some 2,500 of his
paintings, engravings, and drawings in 1970. Picasso was particularly
fond of Barcelona, the city where he spent much of his formative youth.
In fact, some of the paintings were done when Picasso was only 9 years
old.
Sagrada Familia (3
Kms.)
GaudÃ's incomplete
masterpiece is one of the more idiosyncratic creations of Spain -if you
have time to see only one Catalan landmark, make it this one.
