Member of Leading Hotels of the World

THE FONTENAY HAMBURG: The new Luxury Hotel in Germany's largest Waterfront City.

In 1816, Hamburg-based shipbroker John Fontenay acquired a unique plot of land on the beautiful shores of the Alster lake in the heart of the city. Today, it is the site of THE FONTENAY Hotel. Lakeside Luxury at its best.

THE FONTENAY is a reflection of modern Hamburg: open-minded, cosmopolitan and exceptionally welcoming. A homage to the Hanseatic city, the luxury hotel is tailor-made for the many national and international visitors who come to discover and rediscover Hamburg.

Hamburg-born star architect Jan Störmer titled his initial drawings ‘timelessly modern, modern classic’. His innovative sculptural design offers breathtaking views over the Alster from almost all 130 rooms and suites.

Experience THE FONTENAY way of life and share Hamburg's love affair with water.

HOTEL IN THE PARK

Located in the heart of Hamburg, right on the shore of Alster Lake, The Fontenay is a real city resort. Only few other destinations in Germany offer such an ideal location for a visionary hotel project like this one. In his designs for the hotel, Hamburg-born architect Jan Störmer was inspired by the park landscape and the waterline of lake Alster. The organic shape of the building consists of three intertwining circles, designed to make you think of large treetops, blending seamlessly with their surroundings, creating a balance between nature and the urban sphere. The three circles intertwine and narrow in the centre where the elevators and the glassed-in courtyard, featuring trees, as well as the 27 metre high enclosed atrium, can be found.

Hotel in the Park’, this is how architect Jan Störmer entitled his vision when he began his first drawings. Due to the amorphous shape with its sculpted roofscape means the hotel has no backside; it’s surrounded by trees and flooded with light - 14,000 m² of glass blurs the lines between indoors and out, achieving the perfect balance between nature and urban living.

The circular theme continues throughout the building; the shape of the facade is either concave or convex, no wall is parallel to the other, only the guest rooms are separated by straight walls. The hotel was conceived with all rooms facing outwards.

FONTENAY 10

In the 19th century, John Fontenay chose the lakeside metropolis Hamburg to establish his shipping business. He fell in love with the most picturesque waterfront location on the southwestern shore of the Alster lake. In 1816, Fontenay acquired this most distinguished plot in the heart of the city - the location of today's THE FONTENAY hotel development. This quiet, sophisticated address, located at 10 Fontenay, is directly on the Alster Wanderweg – a dedicated hiking trail circling the city – and is within walking distance to Hamburg's most fashionable neighbourhoods, main shopping areas and the new HafenCity – Harbour City.

ART

The artist Antonio Maró was born in Perú in 1928 and has been living in Germany and Belgium since 1950.

His mythical sources are found in his homeland, whose pre-Columbian heritage inspires the spiritual origin of his work. As a student of Willi Baumeister, Maró’s most impressive and important teacher, he succeeded in created a symbiosis with Western cultural traditions. From this he developed his unmistakable signature style with the help of a very idiosyncratic techniques, which secured him international recognition.

Stages of his successful artistic career include numerous solo exhibitions in museums and cultural institutions (including New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Vienna, Brussels, Venice, Madrid, Bangkok, Beijing, and most capital cities of Central and South America) as well as participating at international art fairs (including Art Basel, Expo New York, Art Cologne) and international biennials for contemporary art (including Venice, São Paulo, Habana, Cuenca).

His works are the result of a fusion between two cultural traditions. Yet, above all, the subtle touch of his deep-rooted experiences floats with the monumental color spaces and atmospheric shades of his homeland. There is a desert in northern Peru, where the air liquefies at more than fifty degrees centigrade - everything visible dissolves in metallic vibrations and ribbons of heat, held only by wedged shadow - where legends and myths emerge as living truths from the primal memory in the shape of a bird’s head, torsos, totems, or to manifest human-like profiles.

Antonio Maró's art knows no boundaries. He also experiments with sculpture in various materials such as wood, stainless steel, bronze and ceramics.

Jaschi Klein somewhere

SOMEWHERE A PLACE. Installations created with materials of artificial and natural origin (such as metals, plastics, dead trees) adress the nomadic aspect of transience. External impulses can also modify the planned construction to lend it a diffrent apperance. The reduced form of these structures harbours the suggestion of possibility. Thei archaic semblances makes them feel at at once both alien and familiar. The aspect of matter as constituted by oscillation again emerges in my pictorial language. The setting corresponds with the structures, whose indiviudal features emphasise various facets of the landscape. The action has a temporary apperance.

Jaschi Klein studied painting and photography at the College of Design in Kiel and the College of fine Arts in Hamburg. She spent time abroad for further studies. Since then she has carried out various documentary film projects with Micheal Engler in the US and african acountries, followed by photography and installation projects as well as exhibitions and has been teaching in Germany and abroad. Her works are in private and public collections. e.g.

Rooms

Inspired by circles, the sculptural architecture of the building is mirrored in the interior room concept: the trapezoid layout with its curved walls, impressive panoramic facade and floor-to-ceiling windows creates liberating spaces, flooded with light. Opening up to these expansive views, nature becomes part of the hotel experience. There is ample head space too, courtesy of the 2.85m/9.4ft ceiling height, and starting from the Deluxe room category, a 5m²/54ft² private balcony adds to this sense of generosity.

Warm, bright hues of soft turquoise, light blue and beige, or royal blue with gold accents blend with the beautiful materials and designer furniture. They reflect the unique setting on the shores of Lake Alster in the midst of the park. The oak wood gracing the parquet flooring originates from the forest of the Fontenay Abbey in Burgundy, France. Together with decorative objects by Danish design brand Georg Jensen and original artwork by the Peruvian painter Antonio Máro, they create a canvas of complete harmony.

A touchpad allows guests to conveniently open and close the blinds without a sound, choose between different lighting scenarios, or to adjust the air conditioning in the room. A tablet or a laptop can be connected to the TV via HDMI.

In this peaceful setting, The Fontenay masters the balance between nature and urban living in the midst of Hamburg’s core – it is a city resort in the heart of the town. All guest rooms offer beautiful views across the Rotherbaum district, the park or Lake Alster.

Hamburg

48 Luxurious Hours in Hamburg

Hamburg is arguably Germany’s most cosmopolitan city in its outlook, attitude and openness and one of the country’s hidden gems that is well worth discovering. The Hanseatic city is not famous for one particular attraction. It is the variety and contrast that make it one-of-a-kind. From understatement to avantgarde. From conservative to progressive. From mundane to modern.

Named one of the places to go in 2017, Hamburg is set to to become a must-visit destination for architecture and design aficionados with the historic “Speicherstadt”, the 19th-century Warehouse District, which made the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015, and the much-anticipated opening of the Herzog & de Meuron-designed Elbphilharmonie concert hall.

We sampled a few ideas of what we love the most about our city for you to enjoy the beautiful city of Hamburg:

• Tour the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s state-of-the-art symphony hall boasting some of the best acoustics in the world. Enjoy not only classical masterpieces, but also contemporary compositions along with modern day singer-songwriters.

• Take a walking or boat tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Speicherstadt” – a 150 year old warehouse district which offers a wealth of history and landmark architecture. Enjoy the smell of coffee and spices from around the world. This is the perfect spot for a coffee or tea tasting at one of the many private coffee roasters.

• Visit HafenCity with its stunning architecture and the harbor with its magnificent ships, waterfront and harbor promenade designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid.

• Explore the Old Elbe Tunnel which takes you across to the opposite banks of the River Elbe. Don’t forget to grab a “Fischbroetchen”, a traditional ‘fish sandwich’, for a snack.

• Visit the museums on the “Kunstmeile”, encompassing five renowned art institutions including the Kunsthalle which features 700 years of art and ranks among the most substantial public art collections in Germany.

• Gin Tasting at Hamburg’s very own boutique gin distillery, ‘Gin Sul’.

• Exciting Culinary Masters: harbor-side restaurants featuring authentic seafood creations or with a bird’s eye view of the harbor and the city. Enjoy drinks with lake view at one of the many wooden piers around the Alster. Discover Hamburg’s culinary side including restaurants from Tim Maelzer, Germany’s Jamie Oliver, or at the 3 Michelin star awarded avantgarde restaurant The Table.

• Exclusive workshop tour of the world’s most sought after writing instrument – Montblanc, founded in Hamburg over 100 years ago.

• Take a ferry from the harbor and enjoy the view of Hamburg from the water. Later, stroll through the “Treppenviertel”, the ‘Staircase District’, with more than 5000 steps in the villa district of Blankenese. The natural beaches are beautiful during a summer sunset and the ideal spot to watch the cruise ships passing by. Jet boats get you there in no time.

• In the summer, ride alongside the Elbe River on a leisurely bike tour.

• Should you be visiting on a Saturday, expect bustling excitement and a Sunday morning fish market at the famous “Fischmarkt” in the harbor.

• Take a fashion walk on the heels of Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander and Wolfgang Joop and stroll through the fine shopping passages and arcades. Then explore the offbeat and funky “Schanze” area for eclectic vintage and cutting-edge shops, restaurants and bars that reflect Hamburg’s progressive, liberal character. The “Schanze” is the epitome of individualism.

• Enjoy an authentic “Franzbrötchen”, a buttery pastry with cinnamon and caramelized sugar, reminiscence of the French croissant.

• In the summer, hire a skipper or sail yourself across Lake Alster, experience city sailing directly in front of the hotel, take a rowing class at the city’s oldest rowing Club or try stand up paddling.

• Enjoy a trumpet chorale each morning as the sounds fill the air from the St. Michael’s tower. A tradition that has been in place for over 30 years.

• Visit the International Maritime Museum, 300 years of maritime history documenting the emigration of more than 5 million emigrants through the port of Hamburg. Among them the families of Barbra Streisand and Kirk Douglas.

With its high ceilings and large window fronts, a delightful summer terrace and views across the lake, this unique space merges the outside with the inside in the midst of beautiful parkland.

Executive Chef Stefan Wilke creates his culinary magic with seasonal specialties for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Restaurant Parkview and for the private dining salons, each with room for up to twelve guests.

His dishes are inspired from around the world, yet remain distinctly regional. He is excited by recognisable flavours of traditional dishes that surprise you with a modern twist. All dishes have personal flair and are full of sensory impressions – they instantly evoke memories.”

Lakeside

Bathed in light, high above the Alster, Lakeside welcomes you with spectacular panoramic views overlooking Hamburg.

With its warm shades of white, the clarity of the restaurant reflects the lightness of the surrounding nature – it’s the perfect backdrop for the cuisine created by the young and ambitious team around Executive Chef Cornelius Speinle. The 31-year old Swiss quickly cooked his way to a first Michelin star at his own “dreizehn sinne im huuswurz” restaurant in Switzerland. Awarded 16 points by Gault Millau, Speinle was crowned “discovery of the year in German-speaking Switzerland 2015”.
