The Arc de Triomphe du
Carrousel: (architects Percier and Fontaine) was built between 1806 and
1808 by Napoleon I following the model of the Arc of Constantine in Rome.
The two arches built by Napoleon - Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Arc
de Triomphe at Etoile, were to commemorate his victories, and the grand army
who had won them. The bronze horses on top of the Arc de Triomphe du
Carrousel were taken from Saint-Marc of Venice. These were later returned
after War World II. |

Place Concorde:
The Place de la Concorde, which is the largest place in Paris, is situated
along the Seine and separates the Tuilerie Gardens from the beginning of the
Champs Elysées. It is in the 8th arrondissement, or district, of the city. |

The Champs Élysées,
particularly its upper end, are dominated by airline offices, car
showrooms and bright, light shopping arcades. There is the Lido
cabaret, Fouquet's high-class bar and restaurant, plenty of cinemas
and cafés. At Christmas this is where the fairy lights go and on
December 31 everyone happily jams in, in their cars, to hoot in the

ABOUT PARIS |
|
|
|
Nicknamed "the City of Light" (la Ville Lumière)
since the 19th century, the city of Paris also has a
reputation as a "romantic" city and the "heart of
Europe". The most recognisable symbol of Paris is
the 324 metre (1,063 ft) brown metal Eiffel Tower
located on the banks of the Seine. Paris is also
internationally renowned for its defining
neoclassical architecture and its influence in
fashion and the arts.
As one of the main cultural and political centers in
Europe since the early Middle Ages, Paris contains
many vestiges from its past including numerous art
galleries, museums and theatres. More recently, it
has grown into a significant centre of international
trade with ever-growing modern business districts,
including La Défense, which forms a secondary city
centre. Paris hosts the headquarters of many
international trade and social organisations,
including the OECD and UNESCO in addition to the
head offices of nearly half of all French companies
and offices of many major international firms. |
