Discover
the beautiful northern city of Alexandroupoli...
The town of Alexandroupoli, built on the ruins of the
ancient city of Sali, is a contemporary city with more than
50,000 inhabitants. The modern history of the town begins in
the 1850s, when fishermen from various coastal villages
created a small fishing village that thanks to its strategic
position at the crossroads between East and West, gradually
became the most important commercial, economic and cultural
centre of the whole area.
Don't forget to visit the church of St. Eleftherios, the
neo-classical building of the Education Academy, the two
ruined mosques, the market and the lighthouse (Alexandroupoli's
landmark). |

Museums
The Ecclesiastic Museum hosted in beautiful neo-classical
building features an impressive collection of Byzantine
icons and treasures. Visit the stone-built neo-classical of
the Ethnological Museum of Thrace that hosts a unique
folklore collection.
The Evros river Delta
This unique Mediterranean delta just 20 kilometres away
from Alexandroupoli, has been designated as a wetland of
international importance under the Ramsar Convention of
1974. The wide variety of small islands, lagoons, lakes,
marshes and sandbanks make the delta a unique ecosystem. Its
favourable location along bird migratory routes and its
relatively mild climate provide refuge to a wide variety of
species and plants: 46 species of fish, 21 species of
lizards and snakes, 40 species of mammals and more than 350
plant varieties can be observed there.
Dadia Forest Reserve
Located just 65 kilometres from Alexandroupoli, the
Dadia Forest Reserve is characterised by unique landscape
and vegetation exhibits. Pronounced rocky formations, cliffs,
dozens of streams, small rivers and extensive forests
dominated by pine and oak, offer refuge to more than 45
species of mammal like wolves, jackals, roe deer, squirrels
and bats.
The 40 different species of snakes, frogs, turtles and
lizards that can be observed along with more than 120
species of birds and 36 species of pray birds make the
reserve an area of increased uniqueness and ecological
importance and an excellent day trip from Alexandroupoli.
Other itineraries
For rewarding views of the unique forest vegetation we
propose two itineraries: the Alexandroupoli - Kirki -
Sikorachi and the Alexandroupoli - Loutro - Pessani - Dadia.
Thirty nautical miles away from Alexandroupoli is located
the island of Samothraki popular for its rare endemic fauna
and unique natural beauty.
Popular with visitors are the monuments dating from the
Byzantine era like the castle of Dydimoticho (8th to 15th
century), the fortress of Ioannis Katakouzinos in Pythio (early
14th century) and the temple of Kosmosotira in Feres built
in 1152 a.d.
