Grand
Hotel Excelsior Vittoria being more than 160 years old is located
where once was the vacation residence of emperor Caesar Augustus,
right in front of the bay of Naples, clearly overlooking the
Neapolitan coast line.
Sorrento, where the hotel is set, is without any doubt one of the
places in Italy most visited by tourists. The town itself is not
much, a lot of little pedestrian streets full of shops for the
tourists. But the location of this harbour town is what is important;
the ferry service to the famous close by islands of Capri and Ischia
leave from Sorrento.
The main entrance of the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is on
Sorrento's main square, but the building is set way back in front of
the bay. This is a hotel visited by many important people, Caruso,
the famous opera singer, spent quite some time here. The theme of
the establishment is the opera with enchanting salons and terraces
overlooking the bay. Since the hotel is practically on top of the
harbour from where the ferries leave, they have an elevator for
hotel guests who like to take the ferry and spend a day at any of
the islands. Everything is really great at the Excelsior, except the
rooms in the outbuilding called the Villa which are not so great. |
