THE HISTORICAL COMO CENTRE

The old city centre, closed to the traffic thanks to the ancient walls built in 1100, includes the Cathedral, the Broletto (the former City Hall), San Fedele Church, all of them of Romanesque-gothic origins.
We suggest to visit the Basilicas of Sant’Abbondio and San Carpoforo

BRUNATE

.

The lake's vast panoramas can be admired from above, via the funicolar railway from Como to the heights of Brunate (713 m). The funicolar made by two cars was opened in the far 11th November 1894. The two cars face a 46% gradient on a length of about 950 m. Do not miss is the musical-artistic festival "Appuntamenti musicali a Brunate", held during summer in the most beautiful villas of the quiet Brunate.

THE SILK ROUTE

Universally renowned as the world’s capital of silk, Como and the surrounding areas kept this typical tradition alive over the centuries.
There are many stores and shops which sell silk foulards, ties and clothes at extremely convenient prices.

THE LAKE VILLAS

Many are the magnificent villas which are spread on the shores of the Lake Como: among them Villa Olmo, Villa Gallia and Villa Pisani Dossi in Como, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, the unique Villa Balbianello in Lenno and Villa Melzi in Bellagio.

CASINO DI CAMPONE

The Casino di Campione is at a few kilometres from the Grand Hotel di Como, where game and risk lovers can have exciting evenings with the typical Roulette, Chemin de fer, Black Jack and Slot Machines.

ABOUT COMO

At the southern tip of the lake, 40km (25 miles) north of Milan, Como is known for its silk industry. Most visitors at least pass through here to take a cruise on the lake . But because Como is also an industrial city, this isn't the best place to stay (head instead to one of the more attractive resorts along the lake, such as Bellagio), unless you don't have your own car and are dependent on public transportation (in which case it's the most convenient base).

For centuries, the town's economy has been linked to Milan. Como has been making silk since Marco Polo first returned with silkworms from China (since the end of World War II, Como has left the cultivation of silk to the Chinese and just imports the thread to weave into fabrics). Como's silk makers are major suppliers for the fashion designers of Milan, and big names like Giorgio Armani come here to discuss the patterns that they want with silk manufacturers.
