Grand Hotel Miramare Santa Margherita Ligure. where life is in colour

A white art-nouveau building. A pearl set between the blue of the sea and the green of the park. This is the pure and simple picture of a place that colours every moment spent in the heart of the Italian Riviera.

Welcome to the MIRAMARE, Santa Margherita Ligure, a charming four star GRAND HOTEL where life is in colour everyday.

Heaven, I’m in heaven…

Sometimes a song can describe a place better than a thousand words.

This is probably the case with the MIRAMARE, the GRAND HOTEL belonging to the Fustinoni family since 1945 and previously owned by the Kuoni Stoppani and Torriani families.

Over a century of guests who are made to feel special.

The MIRAMARE was built in 1903 by Giacomo Costa, who entrusted its management to Lina Kuoni Stoppani, widow of the founder of the famous Swiss travel agency.

It was one of the first GRAND HOTELs on the Riviera, rapidly becoming a must for the international “jet set” of the time.

Park and Garden

In the GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE’s large park it’s easy to feel that Spring is eternal. Treat yourself to a stroll amongst picturesque palms and maritime pines, camellias and oleanders, pittosporums and a century old cedar of Lebanon, and terraces planted with lavender and aromatic herbs.

Take a deep breath and… re-blossom.

A view of the Gulf, bracing sea air and the fragrance of flowers. Hospitality is an art that must combine and share the gifts of nature, with the addition of telling details. Behold the enchanting Mediterranean Garden, with its pergola and swimming pool.

Well worth a moment or two.

Here you have all the time in the world.

Swimming Pool

The GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE’s sea water swimming pool is open from April to October, from 9 am to 6 pm.

Sunbed, umbrella, towel and a hundred other kindnesses from staff always at your service.

Not to mention the mild Riviera climate.

Hi, my name’s Tabù. Despite my name, animals aren’t taboo at the GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE.

On the contrary, we’re welcome. Small pets that is, even bigger than me, but without exaggerating of course. You’ll see: it’s really great here. Trust me, I live here. If there are any problems, I’ll have a word with the master of the house (all bark, no bite).

The Miramare has 78 rooms, deluxe suites and classic suites, some with balconies overlooking the Golfo del Tigullio or the Mediterranean park. Pale pastel tones prevail: azure, green and pink. Recently restored stucco work and wooden flooring recreate the splendour of the original interiors. An art nouveau atmosphere enhanced by the comforts of a more contemporary lifestyle.

They all have air conditioning, satellite TV, a phone with a direct outgoing line, free internet access and a safe. Wi-fi and mini-bar free of charge.

And without moving from the GRAND HOTEL, you can swim in the pool and do swimming or water gymnastics courses at the Bagni Miramare.

Golf and Tennis

Circolo Golf & Tennis Rapallo

The Circolo Golf e Tennis Rapallo is open to GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE residents. The 18-hole course is considered one of the most spectacular in Italy. It winds through century old trees and the remains of the Valle Christi Cistercian monastery. The Circolo Golf di Rapallo is also certified to receive disabled players.

Circolo Velico Santa Margherita Ligure

The Circolo Velico Santa Margherita Ligure, on the Calata del Porto by the Casa del Mare, has been organizing regattas of national and international resonance since 1952. The main calendar events are the Regata Pirelli, the Tigullio Championship (Dinghy + Laser classes), and the classic Her & Him and Grandfather & Grandson races, in a more amateur spirit.

Dicover Marvellous Seabed

In Santa Margherita Ligure and neighbouring districts there are various diving clubs offering courses and guided tours of the marvellous seabed of the Portofino Protected Marine Nature Reserve. Exploration of these places is only possible if accompanied by authorized personnel, in the interests of both visitors and the marine flora and fauna.

In the Portofino Regional Nature Park

The Portofino Regional Nature Park is a great favourite amongst all lovers of walking. Every year, trekkers from all over the world come to enjoy the dense network of paths crossing the breathtaking promontory. 700 botanical species and 20 endemic fauna species are just some of the treasures to discover as you ramble.

On the Seaside

Santa Margherita Ligure has been on the calendar for Italian and European runners and trailers for some years now. The “Two Pearls” International Half Marathon in February and the Portofino Trail in November are unmissable for lovers of running in beautiful surroundings. A quick jog along the coastline will explain why.

Art and Culture

The beauty of the landscape is already a work of art to admire in any season. And at certain times of the day all you need do for inspiration is look out from the balcony of your room at the GRAND HOTEL.

The MIRAMARE will bring out the poet in you.

Villa Durazzo

The area around the GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE has other buildings in harmony with the landscape. At Santa Margherita, for example, there’s the 17th century Villa Durazzo, with its sumptuous interior décor, its stucco work and marble, statues and paintings and its spectacular park. It’s a venue for musical and literary events and it also offers guided tours.

Abbazia Della Cervara

A kilometre and a half from the GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE, the Abbazia di San Girolamo at Monte di Portofino, known as the Abbazia della Cervara, is another treasury of art, culture and nature, and is ranked among the 76 Grandi Giardini d’Italia. In its 700 or so years of history, it has welcomed saints, poets, kings, men of religion and science.

Abbazia Di San Fruttuoso

Not far from the GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE is the Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, one of the marvels of the Ligurian coastline. It can be reached by boat or along the beautiful paths crossing Monte di Portofino. Belonging to FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano, the thousand year old abbey is open to the public (opening hours vary from season to season).

Cristo Degli Abissi

The Cristo degli Abissi is a bronze statue laid at a depth of 15 metres on the bed of the Bay of San Fruttuoso within the Portofino Protected Marine Nature Reserve. Restored in 2003 to preserve it against corrosion, the statue is 2.5 metres tall and is visited by divers from all over the world.

Nature and Surroundings

The Portofino Regional Nature Park is a paradise for walkers, at a stone’s throw from the MIRAMARE.

Dozens of kilometres of paths, breathtaking panoramic spots, an extraordinarily rich biodiversity both above and below the surface of the sea, traces of former agricultural settlements, fishing villages, places of historical and cultural interest.

Santa Margherita Ligure

Santa Margherita Ligure, the “Pearl of the Tigullio”, is one of the most prestigious holiday resorts in Italy. Its appeal lies in an urban landscape that blends beautifully into the natural one, in its night clubs, its boutiques and its places of historical interest, such as Villa Durazzo Centurione and the 16th century castle.

5 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino, with its Piazzetta, its painted façades, its villas and castle and its harbour is synonymous with high society and glamour. But perhaps not everyone knows that the tiny church of San Giorgio contains relics of the saint carried there by Portofino sailors returning from the Crusades.

10 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli, the “Gem of the Golfo Paradiso” or “City of the thousand white sailing ships”, is one of the most famous and best preserved old ports in Italy. Visitors to this village of sailors and fishermen are struck by the pastel coloured houses, the beach, its festivals and the panoramic views from its high ground.

Punta Chiappa

The walk from San Rocco di Camogli to the rocky Punta Chiappa (12 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure) is one of the most moving outdoor experiences to be had on the Riviera. It’s reached by 900 steps down through the green woodland. Punta Chiappa is great for swimming, snorkelling and admiring the views. Return to Camogli is by boat.

4 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo is the main city on the Gulf of Tigullio. Its seafront castle, and civic emblem, was built in 1551 to defend against Saracen pirates. Of religious interest is the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montallegro (16th century), at 612 metres above the sea, reached by the only aerial tramway in service in Liguria.

Sestri Levante

At 28 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure, Sestri Levante is known as the city of two seas. A narrow isthmus, in fact, separates the suggestive Bay of Silence from the Bay of Fairy Stories, so named after Hans Christian Andersen, whose stay in the town is celebrated every year in an important festival of children’s literature.

95 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure, Portovenere, pearl of the Gulf of Poets, with the Cinque Terre and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, is a Unesco Human Heritage site. The magical church of San Pietro (once a temple to Venus), the Doria Castle (12th century), the old centre and the grottoes are must-see attractions of the place.

Isola Palmaria

95 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure. The Island of Palmaria, together with Portovenere, the Cinque Terre and the islets Tino and Tinetto, is a Unesco Human Heritage site. A narrow strait separates it from Portovenere. On the west coast, characterized by high cliffs, are the Grotta Azzurra and Grotta dei Colombi, which can be reached by boat or with ropes.

Cinque Terre

At 94 km from Santa Margherita Ligure, Le Cinque Terre, with Portovenere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, are a Unesco Human Heritage site and a National Park and Protected Marine Area. The townships of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are linked by the famous Via dell’Amore between cliffs and terraced vineyards.

At 43 kilometres from Santa Margherita Ligure, Genoa, the capital of Liguria, has an astonishing wealth of architectural and cultural attractions. The Palazzi dei Rolli, in Europe’s biggest historical centre, form a Unesco Human Heritage site. The city’s Aquarium, in the old port, is one of the biggest collections of aquatic biodiversity in the world.

The MIRAMARE Congress Centre has been a benchmark for congress tourism in Italy since 1970. Beeing for more than 40th years the traditional venue of Confindustria’s annual meeting of Young Industrialists, the GRAND HOTEL’s Congress Centre is in great demand thanks to its high prestige, the excellence of its facilities, and easy street access for setups.

Say Yes on The Sea

Do you hold with tradition or prefer more informal solutions?

At the GRAND HOTEL MIRAMARE, with its evocative atmosphere, its park, swimming pool and garden, its views over the Gulf, and its cuisine, you can plan your dream reception here, whatever it is.

It’s your special day, do it in a place that’s always been special.

Vistamare Restaurant

A restaurant decorated with stucco work and frescoes restored to their original splendour. Cuisine in which Ligurian traditions marry the most sophisticated contemporary trends.

Vistamare, which is also open to non-residents, is a tribute to savoir vivre. Imagine a Summer evening, dining on the terrace…

Sunshine glinting on exquisite china. A gulf of light inviting daydreams. Soft candlelight caressed by a faint sea breeze. Decide for yourself which is the right moment – breakfast, lunch or supper on the terrace – to turn into an unforgettable experience. Or don’t choose at all, just experience them one by one.

Pool Bar

Life is easy in Summer.

Especially when you have a pool-side bar and an enchanting pergola.

From midday to 17.30 pm, there’s all the time in the world for temptingly generous salads, traditional trofie al pesto or spectacular cocktails.

In short, lunches and happy hours in perfect MIRAMARE style.

Bar "Le Colonne"

Sun, sea, the scent of flowers.

What better idea than to take a break, al fresco, at the Bar Le Colonne? Order something! Enjoy a cocktail, have a snack, a light lunch even, why not?

The menu and cocktail anthology are enticing to say the least. The sort of bar that really makes people enjoy Summer.

There are 25 of them in Italy: the Bond Bars, prestige locations linked to the 007 legend. The Bar Le Colonne (Roger Moore was a great habitué) is a member of this exclusive club.

Your vodka Martini shaken, not stirred? Excellent choice, but there’s a whole world of other cocktails awaiting you here.

Barracuda Piano Bar

Warm, cosy, relaxing. Nocturnal by nature.

The Barracuda is the essence of the modern piano bar, an ambience in which everything is subdued, voices become whispers, music a discreet accompaniment, and gestures acquire a ritual solemnity: the ideal place for an aperitif, a wine tasting or after dinner drinks with friends in the Winter time?
