A
trip to Taormina is a must for all visitors to Sicily and it only
takes a look around to understand why. Overlooking the sea, it is
surrounded by a rugged landscape dotted with the green of
Mediterranean maquis and the black of volcanic stone – stone that is
spread from the foot of the cliffs to the peek of Mount Etna.
Sicily is a rainbow country that offers
tourists a colour for every corner and in Taormina you can take in
almost the entire spectrum: the black of the rock and the red of the
lava from Etna, the blue and emerald green of the sea that laps the
shores from Giardini Naxos to Letojanni, passing under Taormina’s
watchful eye towards the astounding beauty of the Isola Bella and
Mazzarò.
Sea, sun and Etna are Sicily’s principal
treasures – treasures that Taormina supplies in a range of tastes,
scents and colours that ensures that visitors succumb to the
enchantment of this island. The very act of leaning out to admire
this beautiful bay, with the sun shining on their faces and the
shadow of the majestic and mysterious mountain at their backs, was
enough to ensure that Goethe, Dalí, Dumas, Klee, Klimt, Oscar Wild,
Brahms, Bernstein, Wagner, Ingmar Bergman, Fellini, Marlene Dietric
and many other illustrious visitors, fell under Sicily’s spell after
having visited Taormina.Enjoying the water at Mazzarò, with its
superb view of the Isola Bella (linked to the mainland by a narrow
sand spit), admiring the breathtaking view (perhaps from the cable
car that runs between these gems and the centre of Taormina), having
a coffee or tasting one of the traditional Sicilian deserts at one
of the typical outdoor cafés: This is Taormina. This is the essence
of Sicily. |
