ABOUT TRENTO |
|
|
|
A
northern Italian city that basks in its former glory, the medieval
Trent (Trento) on the left bank of the Adige is famous as the host
of the Council of Trent (1545-63). Beset with difficulties, such as
the rising tide of "heretics," the Ecumenical Council convened at
Trent, leading to the Counter-Reformation. Trent lies on the main
rail line from the Brenner Pass, and many visitors like to stop off
here before journeying farther south into Italy.
Although it has an alpine setting, Trent still has a definite
Italian flavor. As capitals of provinces go, Trent is rather sleepy
and provincial. It hasn't been overly commercialized and is still
richly imbued with a lot of architectural charm, with a small array
of attractions. Nonetheless, it makes a good refueling stop for
those exploring this history-rich part of Italy. |
