The hotel, which is located on Avenida da Liberdade, the
most emblematic road in the city, is being installed in a
building undergoing extensive restoration and refurbishment
that dates from the end of the 18th century. Miguel Câncio
Martins, a Portuguese born internationally renowned
architect, is in charge of the decoration. Miguel Câncio
Martins is best known for his work on mythical public spaces
such as Thiou or Buddha Bar in Paris, Strictly Hush in
London and Man Ray in New York.
The decoration, which has city life and traditions as its
theme, also incorporated modern technology, which is one of
the principal assets of this hotel. As it happens, this was
one of the project's main underlying concerns from the
beginning: combining tradition with modern life in the most
efficient fashion. According to Miguel Câncio Martins: "To
maintain coherence everything meets in the equilibrium of
combining the old with the modern."
The outside of the building was fully preserved. The
interior of the building was fragmented in order to expand
and create the conditions for new common areas, and the
entire interior was decorated in a customised, urban, Lisbon
style.
