ABOUT BARCELONA (Interesting
Stops) |
|
|
|
 |
Les Rambles: The most
famous of Barcelona's avenues, known throughout Europe. At
the end of Les Rambles is the monument to Columbus, 60
metres high.
La Sagrada Familia:
The most symbolic monument in Barcelona. In modernist style,
its designer, Gaudi, designed it with the perfect temple in
mind. Its array of towers and spires is impressive. The
original project included three facades, with four towers on
each one, symbolising the twelve apostles. Although still in
its construction phase, it is possible to view the complete
facade of the Birth of Jesus.
The old quarter: the
Gothic Quarter, Placa de Sant Jaume where the Catalan
Government building is located. This is a 15th century
building with a renaissance facade. Opposite is the seat of
the Barcelona City Council with its irregular gothic facade.
Inside the building are the Salo del Trentenari, Salo de
Croniques, Salo de Cent and the Salo de la Reina Regent
rooms.
The Cathedral: built
during the 13th to 15th centuries, its interior represents
the best of Catalonian gothicism. It is positioned on a
Visigothic basilica. At the start of the 11th century, Ramon
Berenguer I rebuilt it and at the end of the 13th century,
Jaume II reconstructed it. Highlights are its Sant Olegari
and Sant Climent chapels, the Santa Eulalia crypt with a
sarcophagus of polychromatic alabaster; the ambulatory; the
treasury and cloister completed in 1448. Cathedral Museum,
Santa LLucia's chapel and Santa Eulalia's door in a
flamboyant Gothic style. |
