A
masterpiece of the Neapolitan 17th Century, the Grand Hotel
Cocumella was built as a convalescent retreat for Jesuits who, as a
joke, dedicated the edifice to the nymph Colomelide. A splendid
oasis of peace overlooking the Bay of Sorrento, with its centuries'
old allure charmed many a guest from the Duke of Wellington to even
Goethe.
The hotel has 53 elegant air-conditioned bedrooms and suites
charmingly furnished in the local tradition with antiques. Special
features range from a seaside solarium and a private chapel for
concerts, to Cocumella's own tall ship 'Vera', built in 1880 and
used for day cruises along the Amalfi Coast and to Capri. The
Scintilla Restaurant, romantically overlooking the park, serves
Mediterranean cuisine, accompanied by fine Italian wines. In summer,
the Agrumeto presents a relaxed barbecue lunch under the shade of
orange trees by the pool. As Goethe discovered in his time, this
peaceful spot is the perfect seaside escape. |
