The history of our hotel begins in one of the most beautiful places in the Alps. In 1928, the young couple Hans and Irma Singer realised their dream of building a modern ‘Alpenhotel Singer’ in the picturesque and idyllic mountain village of Berwang. Their slogan ‘Light – Air – Comfort’ lured summer visitors and winter sports enthusiasts to the sunny plateau, and their warm hospitality soon won them many loyal regulars. They had a flair for the exceptional and were ahead of their time, and this ensured that the Singer hotel very quickly became one of the Tyrol’s leading hotels. The establishment boasted features that were more than extraordinary at the time, they were near unimaginable: running hot and cold water, central heating, the first telephone in Berwang (next to the post office), its own electricity generating system and its own water supply were all evidence of their genuine pioneering spirit.

In 1932, only four years after the hotel was completed, the ‘Kleines Haus’ (small house) was added to accommodate the growing number of guests. During the war years, the hotel served as a rest and spa home for the German Luftwaffe. In 1950, the annex was connected to the main building by a hall with a reception and lobby. When the ‘Singer Stub’n’ was opened in 1975, the hotel gained not only a culinary meeting place but also a nightclub with live band performances that literally ‘set toes a-tapping’. Not long afterwards in 1978, the house was extended by an additional, fourth floor with new rooms and an alpine style roof, which was more in keeping with the building and gave the hotel the characteristic appearance we still enjoy today. A number of conversions followed in rapid succession: in 1980 the new restaurant with a pine room and bar, in 1982 the first small spa area, in 1984 a brand-new kitchen with additional storage and the new wine cellar. In 1986 spacious comfort rooms and suites in premium pine timber were added to the original hotel of 1928. A comfortable house for our staff was built in 1988, and since 1990 the guests of the hotel, which is part of the Relais & Châteaux association, are welcomed in an impressive entrance hall with a glorious staircase that leads to the cosy and stylishly furnished gallery and fireplace lounge.

However, the modifications to the hotel were not the Singer family’s only changes and achievements. In the early 1950s the ‘Sonnenlift’, which had the first singleseater chairs, was built adjacent to the hotel; this really got tourism under way in Berwang. Hans Singer was also the driving force behind other lift projects and so he significantly influenced the development of tourism in the region. In 1957, his son Günter Singer took over the running of the hotel. Günter married Gerti in 1977, and their son Florian was born in 1982. After graduating from the ‘Villa Blanka’ school of hotel management, Florian gained valuable work experience in top international hotels in Paris, Vail/Colorado, Siena and London before coming home in 2004.

1985 was marked by the death of the hotel’s joint founder Irma Singer, but her life’s work was honoured that same year when the Hotel Singer became a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux association. This was a very successful time, but sadly, in 1987, the family had to come to terms with the death of the hotel founder and tourism pioneer Hans Singer.

The purchase of the adjacent house in 1991 allowed the family to establish the ‘Chalet Singer’ and the ‘Hofherr’ sports shop. Shortly thereafter, Günter Singer and Berwang’s council worked together on the implementation of a modern 4-seater chairlift project, the ‘Sonnalmbahn’, with the first man made snow cannons right next to the hotel, which had also been extended by an umbrella bar adjacent to the ‘Singer Stub’n’. More great lift projects followed in 2007 and 2009 with the Tyrol’s first combined lift (6-seaters and 8-seater cabins), the ‘Almkopfbahn’, and the Zugspitze Arena’s first child-safe lift, the ‘Egghof Sun Jet’.

Singer’s SPA

The construction of ‘Singer’s SPA’ in 2005 was another milestone in the hotel’s history. The SPA’s three-storey building became a focal point and significantly added to the hotel’s attractiveness to visitors. Singer's SPA specialises in treatments and applications that make use of local herbs, essential oils & minerals as well as the Vinotherapie Caudalie® range, and is therefore considered one of Austria's most exclusive spas. A tunnel links the SPA and the main building. Part of this luminous, day lit passage leads underneath the road above and represents a feat of engineering and architectural prowess.

The next generation

In 2008 Florian Singer gradually began to take on more of a managerial role. Since marrying Christina in April 2013, who by then had already been with the hotel for more than seven years, the  young hotelier couple have been the third generation of the Singer family at the helm of the Relais & Châteaux hotel and its exclusive philosophy. Sadly, Günter Singer passed away in April 2015 after a short illness, but his wife Gerti Singer continues to be the hotel's heart and soul, working with her son and daughter-in-law and interacting with their guests on a friendly and personal level.

In summary

As we reflect on our 85-year history, we cannot help but be pleased with the Singer Sporthotel & SPA’s excellent developments. We would like to thank all the people who have helped shape this story and look forward to further successful and eventful years on Berwanger’s sunny plateau.

SPA treatments with the power of natural ingredients

Herbs and aromas

Berwang's plants and flowers grow under ideal conditions due to the high altitude, clean air and intense sunlight. During summer the Alpine meadows are ablaze with dazzling colours, enveloping you in their heady fragrance while each day brings new discoveries. We appreciate these gifts bestowed to us by nature and love to share them with our guests. Be amazed by the power of herbs, aromas and essences – experience them skin deep and marvel at their healing effects.

The miracle of wine

We use high quality products with active ingredients extracted from grapes, grape seeds and grapevines in our treatments; this is done with greatest care and for the benefit of your wellbeing. These natural ingredients are gentle and assure visible results.

Minerals are among nature's most valuable elixirs of wellbeing. During treatments the body absorbs and processes active ingredients from a wide variety of stones and minerals in crystalline form, thereby releasing new energy and strength.

Piroche Cosmetics

To be as close as possible to the secrets of nature – this has been the guiding principle of Piroche Cosmetics for more than 30 years. This family business from Southern Tyrol has developed an unrivalled beauty regime combining traditional Eastern healing methods with Western herbal medicine.

The phenomenal success story of Caudalie® began in 1993 in the Grand de Graves (Bordeaux) at Château Smith Haut Lafitte. For almost 20 years, Mathilde Thomas (founder of Caudalie®) and internationally recognised expert Professor Vercauteren of Bordeaux's University of Pharmacy have worked together to research molecules in wine that are effective in promoting a more youthful and vibrant appearance.

Tyrolean shale oil

The active ingredients found in Tyrolean shale oil originate in prehistoric marine animals and plants. As a result the oil is high in organically bound sulphur, which has an extraordinarily soothing effect on the muscles and joints. Oil shale continues to be mined near the Achensee in Tyrol by the third generation of the same family. This family-run enterprise then extracts the oil to produce the premium-quality care products we use in body wraps, baths and massages.

Mountain activities & walking

Walks, mountain hikes & climbs in the Tyrolean Mountains

The Zugspitz Arena is a favourite destination for mountaineers and alpinists. The region is located among Tyrol's most beautiful mountain peaks where the prospects are simply too tempting to stay down on the ground. In addition to Alpine walks and strenuous uphill climbs, the broad network of over 500km of footpaths and Nordic walking trails leads more leisurely walkers to scenic waterfalls, mysterious mountain lakes and botanical marvels enhanced by culinary and cultural discoveries.

The Singer Sporthotel & SPA offers guided walks as part of its weekly activity programme. Our guide Gerd Amann will be delighted to show you his favourite viewpoints and will take you to the season's most breathtakingly beautiful destinations for walkers. Private guiding is also available on request (charge applies).

Walking makes hungry work! As a special service, we provide you with a Singer's walkers' kit free of charge. It consists of a backpack, poles and a walking map. For a small fee, you can have the backpack filled with food and beverages before your walk.

Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena

Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena – dream holidays for all seasons on Berwang's sunshine plateau

Berwang, the highest village in the Tyrolean Zugspitze Arena is located on a sunlit plateau that provides full panoramic views of the Zugspitze Mountain. The Lechtal Alps are also within reach. A fresh and wholesome mountain climate, the richest flora of the Western Alps, hundreds of miles of footpaths and mountain bike trails as well as a huge range of other sports facilities make ours the summer holiday hotspot par excellence. The Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena also has plenty to offer winter holidaymakers: pure skiing delights, gentle winter experiences and much more!

Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car

Spectacular ride up to the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain

The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and only a short distance from the Relais & Châteaux Singer Sporthotel & SPA in Tyrol. It takes approximately 15 minutes by car to get to the lower terminus at Ehrwald, from where one of the Alps' most spectacular cable car rides takes you to the summit. Its 3,600m course covers 1,725m in altitude and is supported by only 3 towers, thereby allowing passengers to feel as if they are flying. This has earned the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car the affectionate nickname of 'Himmelstürmerin' (assailant of the heavens). Two panoramic cabins with 6.9 x 3.3m of standing space can comfortably accommodate 100 passengers. The 10-minute ride covers an altitude difference of 1,725 m. From the summit you enjoy magnificent views across the Alps and as far away as Munich.

Mountain lakes

Cooling waters in breathtaking Alpine scenery

Crystal clear water and bracing mountain air refresh the senses. The Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena boasts a host of mountain and bathing lakes – dive in and enjoy! Surrounded by a beautiful mountain landscape, you can be assured of refreshing water temperatures even on the hottest days of summer.

Christina Singer's personal tip: Lake Blindsee

Charming Lake Blindsee is just 15 minutes from the Relais & Châteaux Singer Sporthotel & SPA. Even the journey there is picturesque: As you follow a narrow road through the forest you soon catch a glimpse of the deep blue lake, sparkling in the sun. Leave the car in the car park and walk the rest of the way for a refreshing swim in the clear mountain waters. If you feel the need for a little exercise before cooling off, a walk or mountain bike ride around the lake is highly recommended.

Make sure you bring along a blanket or something soft to lie on – the roots and branches on the forest floor will otherwise detract from the pure pleasure of diving into the cool, crystalline water. Swimming in the lake is indeed refreshing, but when your body has adjusted to the water temperature, your soul is rewarded by the most sensational outlook onto the surrounding mountains and forest.

Lake Blindsee is a magical, wonderful place where you can leave your worries behind and recharge your batteries in dazzling natural surroundings.

Other mountain lakes:

Lake Heiterwang and Lake Plansee

Lake Heiterwang is connected to Lake Plansee by a 300m long canal and together they form the second largest body of water in Tyrol. The fjord-like landscape and crystal clear waters are best explored by boat, and a ride on one of the passenger ships that serve the lake provides an unforgettable experience. The MS Margarethe and the MS Willhelm sail the lakes from mid-May to mid-October. Since there are four stops along the lake cruises, they are perfect for combining with walks.

Lake Heiterwang and Lake Plansee also attract divers thanks to their diverse marine flora and fauna. This, in combination with the excellent water quality and extremely good visibility, offers ideal diving conditions. We barely need to mention that the waters are an angler's paradise on earth.

Lake Seebensee

Lake Seebensee in the Mieminger Mountains is situated at an altitude of 1,675m above Ehrwalder Alm. Thanks to its unique location and deep turquoise water, the lake is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. No one ever fails to be utterly enchanted by this centre of spiritual energy; especially once they have cooled their tired legs in the lake's clear water.

Lake Drachensee

Lake Drachensee is the highest lake in the region. Just below the Coburger Hütte mountain refuge, it lies 1,910 m above sea level and is 28m deep. The lake's water temperature is guaranteed to cool you down.

Mountain biking

Explore the Tyrolean Zugpitz Arena on two wheels in the Austrian Alps

Leisurely routes, waterways and challenging trails – mountain bikers can expect 300 to 1,200m of altitude difference. Views of the Tyrolean Zuspitze massif ensure an unforgettable cycling holiday in Tyrol. After a strenuous uphill ride, you are rewarded with stunning mountain vistas, lush vegetation, bright blue skies and glorious sunshine as well as a host of mountain huts where delicious treats await the intrepid cyclist

The gentle side of winter

Winter sports hotel in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena, Austria

The snow crunches underfoot, the natural world all around is still and silent, and the sun beams down from an azure sky – this is the perfect time to get to get up close and personal with the gentle side of winter in the area around Singers Sporthotel & SPA, where the season presents itself at its most charming.

Winter walking

Winter walking opens up all the magic of our beautiful countryside. The slow pace of walking is a source of meditative calm as it gives you time to pay attention to the small details around you. Over 60km of cleared winter hiking trails in the Tyrolean Zugspitze Arena invite you to enjoy the snowy landscape. You decide whether to take your time or pick up a more sporting pace as you make your way through the white idyll. If you prefer to walk with company, we suggest you join our SPA Manager Theresa on a Nordic walking jaunt – there are many different paths that will take you over hill and dale.

A snowshoe walk with our mountain guide Gerd is a special experience. As a local, he can tell you a great deal about the region around the Zugspitze Arena. Away from the slopes and trails, where nothing and no one disturbs the peace and quiet, you walk in knee-deep snow through easy terrain and natural forests.

Cross-country skiing

As you glide silently across the landscape, your entire body is exercised and your lungs fill with mountain air while you delight in the Alpine panorama before you. Cross-country skiing (or Nordic skiing) has been enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years. The sport's highly beneficial cardiovascular effects as well as its efficacy in exercising the entire musculature have no doubt contributed to this phenomenon. A vast network of cross-country ski runs (both classic and skating), over 110km in total, awaits you in the area surrounding the Singer Sporthotel & SPA. Both beginners and ambitious athletes will find the conditions here superb and will be able to indulge fully in the cross-country experience. Guaranteed snow is offered by high altitude cross-country ski runs as well as the circular 'Golfrundloipe' run with a snow cannon at the foot of the Zugspitze. For some extended cross-country fun, there are night-time runs in Hinterbichl and Heiterwang.

The romance of winter

Make your way by torchlight through the snowy landscape in the company of the quiet of the night: a torch lit walk is part of our weekly programme and an inspirational experience that we would like to share with you. A romantic atmosphere is also assured on a horse-drawn sleigh ride – we would be delighted to arrange one for you. Slightly more racy, but no less attractive, is tobogganing by moonlight. A short uphill walk is followed by a swift descent lit by head torches. Afterwards, enjoy a drop of hot mulled wine or a glass of fine wine at the bar – that's what we call winter!

Ski & snowboard

Ski-in & ski-out resort on the doorstep in the Berwang ski area

The Singer Sporthotel & SPA's guests enjoy holidays that are as close to the slopes as you could possibly hope to be. Berwang's 'Sonnalmbahn' cable car is adjacent to the hotel and takes you straight to the Berwang ski resort. A relaxing ride on the 'Sonnalmbahn' takes you back to the hotel. During the school holidays we offer our younger guests a free shuttle to the ski school until such a time as they can cope with skiing back down to the valley. Guests who have booked private ski instruction with Berwang's ski school are picked up from the hotel.

Berwang ski area

The 'Sonnalmbahn' takes you from the hotel's doorstep straight up into the Berwang ski area and its 36 manicured kilometres of slopes and 12 cable cars and lifts.

Ski rental

For the best skiing and boarding equipment, why not pay a visit to the Sport Hofherr ski rental shop next door to the Singer Sporthotel & SPA in Berwang? Renting equipment allows you to get on with the fun on the pistes without the hassle of transporting all your gear.

Learn to ski with Skischule Berwang

The ski school in Berwang has received four Quality Awards from the Tyrolean Ski Instructors Association. It offers courses for children from age three in the BOBO's KINDER-CLUB children's ski school, group skiing lessons for beginners as well as intermediate and advanced skiers, and also runs private courses for individuals or small groups. Guests receiving private instruction are picked up from the hotel and will be looked after from their first day on the slopes until they can 'wedel' with impunity!

Culture and days out

Leisure facilities in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena

Royal castles & palaces

The Romantic Road

Delve into the history of the Bavarian kings – just a 25-minute drive from the Singer Sporthotel & SPA. The palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are among Germany's most popular destinations, each year attracting millions of visitors from around the world. Every September the classical concerts with world-renowned singers and orchestras that are held in the Sängersaal at Neuschwanstein represent a high point in the region's cultural life.

Neuschwanstein concerts

We also recommend a visit to the Museum of the Bavarian Kings in Hohenschwangau, where visitors are given insights into the history of the Wittelsbach family from its beginnings to the present. The focus of the exhibition is on King Maximilian II, who turned Hohenschwangau Castle into a summer residence, and his son, King Ludwig II, the creator of Neuschwanstein Castle.

Museum of the Bavarian Kings

Linderhof Palace (35 minutes by car)

Linderhof Palace was built in 1870-1886 under the Bavarian King Ludwig II. It is the smallest of the three royal palaces, and the only one that was completed in his lifetime. King Ludwig II often stayed at Linderhof Palace, and it is thought to have been his favourite. Our Relais & Châteaux hotel is adjacent to the Romantic Road, and the drive to the Linderhof Palace takes a mere 35 minutes.

Tip: 'Königsschlösser' combined ticket

Combined ticket for all of Ludwig II's palaces. The 'Königsschlösser' combined ticket is valid for six months and entitles the holder to one visit to each of the royal palaces (Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein Castle). The ticket is available online and from the respective ticket offices. We will be happy to reserve tickets for you the day before your visit.

Traditional Alpine village of Fallerschein

The village of Fallerschein lies on the route between Stanzach and Namlos. It is a comfortable 30-40-minute walk from the A-road's turn-off. The road is partially asphalted and therefore suitable for pushchairs.

This charming Alpine village of 40 timber cottages surrounded by lush, steep meadows and rushing streams provides an insight into the old ways of the Tyrol. Two of the cottages serve typical Tyrolean specialities. Above the Fallerscheinstube, visitors will find a hide fitted with a telescope for observing deer and local game. The Alpine village of Fallerschein is just a 15-minute drive from our Relais & Châteaux hotel, and there is ample parking between Stanzach and Namlos.

Singer’s world of wine

Gourmet experiences meet wellbeing & SPA in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps

The oenophile heart of our hotel beats in the wine cellar, which currently houses approximately 8,500 bottles from around the world. Our selection ranges from Germany, Italy and South Africa to Australia, Argentina and Spain. Approximately 1,600 of the wines stored in our cellar are Austrian reds and whites. We are well known and liked among connoisseurs for our exceptional selection of Bordeaux wines. Naturally, we cater for Champagne lovers too, and we currently stock around 400 bottles from different producers.

Experience Singer's world of wine and enjoy our wine cellar tours, wine presentations and blind tastings with sommelier Thomas Rückhörmann. Our rare wines are always worth a visit and include our biggest bottle, an 18-litre 2007 Mephisto made by the Goldenits winery in Tadten near Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Another rarity is the Singer family's oldest treasure: a 1928 Château Climens Bordeaux from Haut Barsac.

Wellbeing & refreshment in Singer's SPA Bistro

Feeling relaxed in our SPA's soothing atmosphere, and in need of refreshment? The modern SPA Bistro serves fresh fruit, juices and light meals from the SPA kitchen. In fair weather, we open the doors to the adjacent pool terrace where you can enjoy a drink or snack in the sunshine. The location and picture-book panorama make this a unique experience.

This is the only way you can know exactly what room types are available for the dates you want, and the best possible rate, because you are dealing directly with the hotel.
Bear in mind that websites set up to give an automatic answer, work with allocated quotas given by the hotel, therefore when it appears there are no rooms available for the date you want, this is not necessarily true, because they never allocate ALL the rooms to third parties.
