The large open-air
swimming pool, set amidst the trees and flowers of the hotel garden,
provides a pleasant alternative to the beach.
The large private beach of the Hotel Augustus, with its fine sand
and wide, open spaces, is one of its major attractions. There is a
bar serving drinks and snacks and a buffet lunch served in the beach
garden. In the evening the Club House, with its piano bar and
restaurant, serves dinner, or just a drink, by candlelight on the
beach. |

Forte
dei Marmi is a stylish resort, favoured by the wealthy Florentines
and Milanese, with immaculate sandy beaches and elegant villas in
tree-lined avenues. Sheltered by the Apuan Alps, it has a consistent
climate with excellent bathing. Smart cafés and boutiques may be
found in the centre and restaurants are of a high standard. This
well known, elegant seaside resort lies on what was once a strip of
Mediterranean maquis. The town grew up in the Renaissance period
around a quay used for loading marble from the nearby Apuan
mountains which was carried to the sea along a road that was built
on the suggestion of Michelangelo himself. In 1788 the Grand Duke
Leopoldo built the fortress that gives the town its name and is
still to be seen in Piazza Garibaldi in the centre.
