Lausanne, whose 127,000
inhabitants make it the second-largest city on Lake Geneva and the
fifth-largest in Switzerland, is built on three hills overlooking
the lake, called Lac Léman by the city's inhabitants. The upper and
lower towns are connected by a small metro (subway).
For centuries Lausanne has been a favorite spot for exiles and
expatriates, attracting, among others, deposed monarchs. On top of
the incredible natural beauty of the area, the cultural
possibilities of the region offer a wide scope of choices for the
most demanding clients. Actually, Lausanne has nearly 3 times more
museums than Bern, the nation’s capital !. From the famous Gianadda
Foundation which regularly presents temporary exhibits of great
importance including those of Klee, Goya, Rodin, Giacometti, Schiele,
Lautrec, Moore, Modigliani, Degas, de Staël, Manet, and Miro; to the
extraordinary Olympic Museum a living memoir of the history of the
Olympic Games, this museum is both modern and impressive.
Apart from the museums, there are events such as the famous Ballet
Béjart, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne or the Avenches Opera, and
various city festivals to fill your stay with distraction with a
twist of inspiration. |
