Rich
in ancient history, Monza is today a busy industrial centre, with a
population of approximately 120,000. It is home to a range of
manufacturing operations and is perhaps best known for being the
home of the Italian Grand Prix, run on one of the fastest tracks in
the auto racing world. The ancient capital of the Lombards, Monza
owed much of its importance, and its chief public edifices, to Queen
Theodelinda. In 595 she founded the cathedral in which is preserved
the iron crown of Lombardy, supposed to have been made from a nail
used at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. |
