BBuilt around 1500, the hotel has been family-owned since 1773 and has since continually adapted to reflect changing tourism patterns.
What started as a simple hostel has developed over the years into one of South Tyrol’s most renowned hotels. Today, the Hotel Elephant is an important part of European travel culture as well as being an enduring symbol of Tyrolean tourism.
To sum up, the Hotel Elephant is a hotel which exudes history and hospitality, a place which welcomes its guests in a unique, very individual manner.
Even Jose Saramego, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was enchanted by the story of the elephant’s journey, so much so that he then wrote a book inspired by the tale.
This story began at the end of 1551, when an elephant complete with a large entourage stopped off in Brixen and stayed there for 14 days.
It was a gift from the Portuguese King John III to his nephew, Archduke Maximilian of Austria, and was on its way from India to Vienna. At that time the exotic animal was a sensation: it was applauded by bishops and cardinals in Trento and received in triumph in Bolzano. In Brixen, too, the townsfolk formed a guard of honour. It is no surprise that the elephant left a lasting impression: today’s Hotel Elephant continues to have a similar effect on its guests.
Once home to the local bishop, Brixen combines culture and pleasure like no other town in South Tyrol. The charming paths and glorious buildings steeped in history embody the attractive nature of Brixen's old town.
Hotel Elephant recommends to visit the Pharmacy Museum as well as the Hofburg Palace located only five walking minutes from us in the old town.
We work closely together with experienced tour guides showing you the whole beauty of Brixen and the Eisack Valley in English language. Please contact us by phone or by email for any further details or for a more detailed, individual offer.
"Dining should be an unforgettable sensuous journey of discovery", says the Elephant’s head chef Mathias Bachmann.
We combine innovative tastes with traditional surroundings. You can indulge yourself with our specially-designed dishes in a classy setting. Under the leadership of Michael Falk and Mathias Bachmann, the Apostelstube was given a charming 1920s Art Deco makeover.
Let yourself be spoiled by our excellent restaurant and kitchen team as you embark on a unforgettable journey for all the senses in a special atmosphere.

This is the only way you can know exactly what room types are available for the dates you want, and the best possible rate, because you are dealing directly with the hotel.
