Verona was theater to that
greatest of love stories: Romeo and Juliet. But Verona is much more than
this. It is also a Roman and Medieval city, a Gothic and Renaissance
city engaged in architecture -Sansovino, Sanmicheli-
in painting -Jacopo Bellini, Mantegna, Pisanello, Da Verona, Titian- and
many other artists who make Verona's churches true living museums. And
since the 1700's Verona has witnessed fervent activities by architects,
painters, sculptors and men of culture: Philharmonic Theater, Academy of
Science and Humanities, Civic Library, Capitulary Library (1500 years
old!), Castelvecchio Museum, Archeological Museum, Italian Independence
Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Natural History. Today's Verona
is a wellspring of culture. Piazza Erbe (with the Hotel Gabbia d'Oro
stationed on its corner) is the most complete synthesis of this. |
