The foundation of the picturesque
Gualdo Cattaneo, goes back to 975. Its name
derives from the word "wald" meaning forest, and from
this, one can imagine the richness of the woods which
still surround this area.
A must see is the Rocca dei Borgia, a mighty
cylindrical tower, which rises up on the main square.
Begun in 1494, it was designed according to the military
standards of the time, when the advent of artillery was
substantially changing defence structures of all types.
The rocca, or fortress, called “Dei Borgia” in honour of
Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), was completed in
1500, with various masters taking part in its
construction. Also interesting to visit is the parochial
church with a facade decorated
with a relief showing the mystic Lamb with the symbols
of the four Evangelists; the inside contains a beautiful
13th century crypt. The church of St. Augustine another
must see place, has an interesting portal on the
left-hand side of the entrance, and inside, several
important paintings of the 14th and 15th centuries. |
