Designed by architect and hotelier Marcel Jacquignon, Hotel President opened its doors for the first time on May 18, 1962. It was bought by Swissair and Nestlé after their joint venture in 1980, then later acquired by the Tamman family in 1989. In 1992, the family renovated and expanded the hotel with a 190 million CHF investment that included an additional wing of 80 guestrooms and suites, a conference center, underground parking, and a terrace with an outdoor pool.
The hotel reopened in 1996 as the new Hotel President Wilson, in honor of the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson—founder and relentless defender of the League of Nations. (Palais Wilson next door was built in 1873 and today houses the headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.)
The Hotel President Wilson became part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts and a member of the Luxury Collection in 2000. From 2007 to 2010, it underwent a 40 million CHF renovation headed by Swiss architects Atelier d’Architecture 3 BM3.
