Vietri sul
Mare is an ancient Etruscan town, that eventually fell
under the Samnites' domination and finally under the Roman
rule. It is located only three kilometres away from Salerno
and the first village you find coming from it. It is a
picturesque village famous above all for its ceramics
handicraft, that has always been very flourishing. During
the 3rd decade of XX century began a new original phase of
Vietri ceramics: a group of International artists (mostly
German) settled here, opened their ateliers and carried
their style and experience into the local handicraft:
resulting into a dramatic loss of its strength and a
merging with the local tradition.
Other than that, Vietri is also a tourist resort, with
interesting places to visit. The centre, overlooked by the
mount San Liberatore, lies on a terraced hill, falling down
to the sea. Main monument is the Church of San Giovanni
Battista, from the XVIII century with its elegant dome
covered with majolica. Further on, at Raito, inside the
tower rising in the park of Villa Guinigi, there is the
Museum of Ceramics, where are exposed some pieces of
Vietri's production, from XVII century up to present days.
At Dragonea there are the Caves of San Cesareo, with
characteristic rocky shapes created by water erosion; inside
on of those caves there are the remains of an ancient
chapel. Apart there is the village of Fluenti, on the edge
to Cetara. Underlying the town is the Marina of Vietri, with
a large shore provided with many tourist amenities, with a
Saracen Tower of XVI century, in the middle. The main
archaeological remains recovered in the area is in the
Abbey of the near town of Cava dei Tirreni.
