Andorre is a small country
located in the heart of the Pyrenees, between France and Spain. Legend
tells that Charlemagne founded Andorra in 805 in recognition to the aid
given by its inhabitants against the Saracens. For 715 years, from 1278
to 1993, Andorrans lived under a unique co-principality, ruled by French
and Spanish leaders. In 1993, this feudal system was modified with the
titular heads of state retained, but the government transformed into a
parliamentary democracy. Long isolated and impoverished, mountainous
Andorra achieved considerable prosperity since World War II through its
tourist industry. An estimated 9 million tourists visit annually,
attracted by Andorra's duty-free status and by its summer and winter
resorts.
The Principality of Andorra has the largest skiable area in the Pyrenees.
The country can offer 3 ski stations, 174 slopes representing a distance
of 282 km, 107 skilifts, the services of about 650 instructors and 1387
snow canons which guarantee skiing during the whole season. All this in
a territory which measures only 468 sq.km.
Andorra also offers you a large variety of activities for your holidays,
its thermal
centre where you can relax, 3000
shops with a very wide range of goods, mini-golf, trekking,
excursions, mountaineering, ice-rink, etc.
