THE FINE ARTS MUSEUM OF SEVILLA |

|
This lovely old convent off Calle de Alfonso XII houses one of the most important Spanish art collections. A whole gallery is devoted to two paintings by El Greco, and works by Zurbarán are exhibited; however, the devoutly religious paintings of the Seville-born Murillo are the highlight. An entire wing is given over to macabre paintings by the 17th-century artist Valdés-Leal. His painting of John the Baptist's head on a platter includes the knife--lest you miss the point. The top floor, which displays modern paintings, is less interesting. |
