Sitges
is a lovely village 35 Kms. South of Barcelona,
and it’s absolutely worth a visit. Sitges is
known for its carnival, its nice weather and its
night life.
Sitges is the perfect one day excursion from
Barcelona. But Sitges is much more than a place
to spend one day. The list of things to do here
is almost endless. If you ever come here, be
prepared to want to spend the rest of your life
in this unique town.
With its more than 300 sunny days, Sitges is a
secure bet to spend the summer vacations. And
you have to know that thanks to its special
micro-climate, "Summer" lasts here longer than
anywhere else in the area. In the middle ages,
Sitges used to be the only port town on the
coast from Barcelona to Tarragona.
The town main
industries were its vineyards and the commercial
activities with other ports in the Mediterranean.
From one of these ports, the Greek island of
Monembasia, a new variety of grape was imported,
the malvasia.
Sitges is not only a town by the sea. It is much
more than this. For more than one century the
town of Sitges has been a cultural meeting point.
At the end of the 19th century Santiago Rusiñol
settled in Sitges, in a house known as " El Cau
Ferrat". Here he celebrated the famous "Modern
Style Parties", that made Sitges worldwide
famous among artistic circles. |
