Located
in the northern part of Umbria, the Citta di Castello is a classic
example of a Renaissance city. The City Art Gallery holds works by:
Raphael, Luca Signorelli, Ghirlandaio, Della Robbia, Vasari and
other Renaissance painters, while masterpieces by Piero della
Francesca can be admired in the nearby towns of Sansepolcro (the
artist's birthplace), Monterchi, Arezzo and Urbino.
Medieval villages that have remained unchanged lie off the beaten
track, dotting the rolling hills just outside the city walls. These
towns are the ideal place to go for walks, excursions on bicycles (which
can be rented at the hotel), tours on horseback (there a number of
well outfitted stables in the area) or gourmet and wine tasting
venues in the country. A brand new 18 Holes Golf Course has been
recently opened which is only a half-hour away by car. Lastly,
because of its geographical location, Citta di Castello is the ideal
base for day- trips to the most important tourist attractions in
Umbria and Tuscany. |
