*** ABOUT THE RHODES ***

Old Rhodes town

The Medieval City of Rhodes

Rhodes is an island blessed by Nature with over 300 days of sunshine per year and a unique variety of landscapes and colours:
From cosmopolitan sandy beaches- awarded with 37
Blue Flags, more that any other destination in Greece- to well hidden magnificent bays, blue crystal clear sea and sky and green quiet hills and valleys. Rhodes is an island blessed by history with three ancient cities, a medieval town, being a World Culture Heritage Site, seven medieval castles, and neoclassic mansions.
An age-old culture with traditions kept alive. A gastronomer's paradise with exquisite wines famous since ancient times.

THE MEDIEVAL CITY OF RHODES
The magnificent medieval city of Rhodes is the largest of its kind in Europe and it is characterized by UNESCO as a monument of world cultural heritage. It offers a unique experience to visitors with its neat captivate talent to combine yesterday and today. Dominated by the imposing Palace of the Grand Master this fortificated Medieval City is surrounded by moats and walls that count up to 4 klm in total.

ANCIENT STADIUM
On the top of Monte Smith, where one can enjoy a unique picturesque view of the town and the seashore, lays the Temple of Apollo and a little further, the impressive ancient open-air stadium.

MUSEUMS
For those who are fond of antiquities but also are anxious to meet the history and culture of Rhodes a number of museums is available, most of them found in the Medieval City of Rhodes, such as the Archaeological museum, the Byzantine museum, the Rodian house, the Municipal Art Gallery etc.

FILERIMOS
The Mon
astery of Our Lady and the remains of the ancient acropolis of Ialysos, one of the three ancient cities of Rodos, are found on the hill of Filerimos. Visitors can walk along a 'Golgotha', a tree sheltered pathway with a series of shrines with scenes of the Passion. This footway leads to an enormous imposing cross, from the top of which one can cherish the outstanding view of villages and bright green valleys that are generously stretched around.

THE VALLEY OF BUTTERFLIES (PETALOUDES)
A valley, stocked by pine and storax trees, loaded with brown-red butterflies (a moth of panaxia quadripunktaria) from mid June to September. A pride of nature with narrow rock walkways, lakes decorated by water lilies, rustic bridges, running waters and resting places. A smell of retsina spreads around all the way to the top of the valley together with a fresh caress of the aura.

KAMIROS
The smallest of the three ancient cities forming the Rodian state is located on the west part of the island. More isolated and conservative than commercial Lindos and aristocratic Ialysos, it retained its rural character throughout antiquity. The remains of the city is a characteristic example of Hellinistic urban layout and design, with a division into zones of public and private buildings, its arrangement around the natural slopes of the hill, and its chess-board system of streets.

MONOLITHOS CASTLE
The village owes its name to a huge stone that is imposed on a magnificent rock on the top of which a castle is established. Within the walls of this impregnable fortress lie the churches of St Panteleimonas and St George with fine wall paintings.

KALLITHEA
South of Koskinou, a colorful traditionally built village, lays Kallithea, formerly renown for its spas. The area is overflowed by wonderful gardens, while its steep rocky creeks allow diving.

SEVEN SPRINGS (EPTA PIGES)
A sight of natural beauty with the scent of pine on every breath. Wooden bridges and trickling streams set the mood at Seven Springs. Relax and enjoy you drink or meal next to the streams. Adventure seekers may walk around the footpaths searching out the source of each of the seven springs!

LINDOS
A unique monument of preservation, a neat combination among sky and sea blue with the dazzling white colour of the traditional houses, set to have been a powerful city in antiquity. The astonishing beauty of the castle of Crusaders, the Acropolis of Lindian Athena on the top of the hill, and the paved streets of the village capture visitors in a stunning way. Walk through the small streets, or visit the Acropolis either on foot or ...using the "Lindos Taxi" donkeys!

PRASONISSI
For those who love the Aegean blue waters and seek for windsurfing adventure, Prasonissi, the southern seashore of the island is an ideal proposal. The west side beach is usually windy, in perfect contrast with the east, which is usually calm. You may reach Prasonissi either from the east or the west side of the island. Try both routes, one to reach it and the other when leaving the area, so to ensure that you will drive through the magnificent countryside of the island.
