Cabezón
de la Sal is located overlooking the Saja River, on the north of
Spain, to 42 Kms. from Santander. In mid-August the small Cantabrian
town of Cabezón del Sal stages a colourful array of folk
celebrations. These include a tug of war contest between men and
cattle (obviously rigged!), dance troupes, tambourine players, pipe
players, mountain songs and lassoing. The day draws to an end with a
procession that bears strong similarities to the queue of animals
waiting to board Noah's ark.
Carriage and mountain horses, herds of sheep, mountain goats and
sheep dogs are just a few of the animals that feature in the parade.
To mark the end of the day, bonfires are lit around the town.
Some places to visit in this town are the Palacio de la Bodega, the
Saint Martin church, and the Nature Museum. |
