This beautiful Quinta in Madeira Island is situated on one
of the hills surrounding the city of Funchal, close to its
principal area of historical interest.
This charming Madeiran family home was built in the 18th
century. Later on, it was the home of well known French and
British families. During the Napoleonic wars, General
Beresford, the Commander of the British forces on the
island, chose it as his residence. His magnificent
sideboard, a reminder of his stay, still adorns the
Restaurant of our dining room.
The Estalagem Jardins do Lago, with 31 double rooms, 4
Junior Suites and 5 Suites, all facing south to the gardens
and the sea, designed to offer the best in modern functionality and traditional comfort and style, opened a
new chapter in the rich history of this Quinta in Madeira
Island.
The interior of the main house was refurbished and decorated
to maintain its original high standard and style and
continues to provide a perfect setting for its antiques.
Offering a variety of pleasant and relaxing areas, a
library, a billiard room, a charming breakfast room with a
verandah featuring an exceptional sixteenth century ceramic
wall panel, an elegant evening Restaurant "The Beresford"
and a Bar "The Visconde" perfect for sunset cocktails and
nightcaps, with live music.
Know for the beautiful the gardens are unique in their
variety (around 500 different species of plants) and natural
beauty, with an area of 2.5 hectares full of wonderful
examples
of rare and old trees. They have also been the home
for 45 years of "Colombo", the Quinta's giant tortoise.
The tranquil lake nestled in these mature botanical gardens,
provided the origin of the Hotel's name. Amongst the mango
trees, in a relaxing area, there is a large Tropical heated
Swimming pool partially covered, with Bistro, Sauna, Turkish
bath and Jacuzzi. For the more energetic, the all weather
surface Tennis Court, Table Tennis and a well-equipped Gym,
