A beautiful address in Gascony

In the heart of Gascony, in Barbotan, a small spa village surrounded by Armagnac vineyards, discover an amazing country destination, made of bespoke hedonistic experiences.
Nestled in the village, in a century-old parc
Hidden behind the sculptural XIth-Century-old Church, La Bastide sits proudly on top of Barbotan spa village. Before climbing up the stone front steps, a walk through the gardens will enchant you with their huge plane tree canopy, bonzai-shaped yews and andalusian fountains.
Every Wednesday, a lively country market livens up Main Street. It is Gascony in its warmest and joyful expression.

An elegant XVIIIth Century Charterhouse

The stone arcades of its ochre facade reminds the delicate curved lines of an Italian Palazzo.
Once inside, a succession of lavish salons and dining rooms shelters a select collection of genuine antiques, paintings and curios, cherished by the owners.
Enjoy an afternoon by the fire in the library, a summer dinner under the lime tree, relaxing in the soft cushions of our sofas with a glass of tawny Armagnac from our vines ; the harmony of Gascony’s luminous simplicity celebrates these exquisite pleasures.

Exquisite and blissful rooms

Each one of the light-filled, very spacious rooms and suites is different, all of them are an ode to well-being and serenity.

Their decoration is a stylish, colourful reinterpretation of French countryside style. Shades of warm colours ranging from ochre to dusky pink, grege to chestnut plus saffron echo prints that pay tribute to the purity of whitewashed walls and ceruse beams.

OUR VINEYARD

La Bastide is the hospitality part of a widder estate, which produces Armagnac spirit since 1967, under the label of Château de Sandemagnan.

Max Dumolié is the oenologist ; he was born and grew up in Barbotan. His carreer binds intimately with La Bastide’s and the Guérard-Barthélémys’, whom he has been accompanying land and wine projects since the begining

He receives in Sandemagnan wine and history lovers and narrates them how Armagnac is made, what makes it different from other spirits such as Cognac.
This narration is followed by tasting to understand the beauty and shades of “eau de vie”.

In 1983, a beautiful huge brass alambic (still) was accomodated in the Cellar.
Every november, a festive period called “la Flamme“ (the flame) takes place : white wine is distilled in the Alambic, night and day. The lucky ones who may pop in at this frosty time, will enjoy a very warm pre-dinner drink, by the still.

In 1957, when the Barthélémy family bought up La Bastide, they also purchased a 40-hectare vineyard, located on the best Barbotan soils, perched on sunny hills. Named Château de Sandemagnan, after a noble old mansion in the estate, our winery produced its first vintage in 1967.

Ever since, we have been perpetuating the tradition, as we turn into spirit a lumpy green white wine called “Folle Blanche” (White Fool). Every November, we distill it a a huge brass still. The white spirit is then place into oak barrels, when it will age for decades, acquiring amber and tawny shades.

Our cellar is open to visits (in French only) from Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays and harvest.
