THE REGION

Piazza Garibaldi

When you do tear yourself away, walled Cortona is just 6km from the centre – Piazza Garibaldi... One of the oldest cities in Italy, it was here that Hannibal routed the Romans in the 2nd century. Although it has Etruscan origins, what you see today is mainly medieval. In the ancient centre are historical buildings and the Etruscan Museum home to archeological masterpieces. Arezzo is under an hour’s drive while Siena and the northern towns of Umbria can easily be visited in a day.
