Marie Lorain, a seamstress but also a very good cook, opened a small boarding house in Joigny, in a beautiful bourgeois home. The establishment was named after the hill which overlooks it, the Côte Saint-Jacques.
Born the youngest of four children in 1934, Michel Lorain chose a career in the kitchen after an apprenticeship as a pastry chef.
he took up the reins of the family business with his wife Jacqueline and proposed a simple, regional cuisine.
With the creation of the nearby A6 motorway, the small inn was transformed into a high quality restaurant, which was recognized throughout the region.
he was awarded its first Michelin star, and then a second in 1976.
Jacqueline Lorain became a confirmed sommelier, one of the first women to succeed in the traditionally male-dominated world of winemaking.
the Côte Saint-Jacques became a member of the Relais et Châteaux association, and of Tradition et Qualité. That year, it also received three red toques from Gault and Millau.
After a secondary school degree in science and apprenticeships with Troisgros in Roanne, Claude Deligne (Taillevent in Paris) and Fredy Girardet (in Crissier, Switzerland), Jean-Michel Lorain permanently joined his father and climbed the ranks of the Côte Saint-Jacques kitchen brigade.
Michel Lorain obtained three Michelin stars and at the age of 27, Jean-Michel, who had actively participated in this adventure, became the youngest chef in France to obtain this supreme distinction.
Jean-Michel was named Chef of the Year by Christian Millau, who granted him the almost perfect mark of 19.5/20.
major work was undertaken to transfer the dining rooms to the banks of the River Yonne. It was at this time that the direction of the kitchen was formally handed from father to son.
With all these changes, the restaurant lost a Michelin star in 2001. It won the star back three years later and the Côte Saint-Jacques was reinstated into the very closed circle of the twenty-six best restaurants in France.

Young people are not forgotten at la Côte Saint-Jacques & Spa *****, and Jean-Michel Lorain gives particular attention to the dishes served and to the welcome given to them.
Thus, he has specially created an ”Initiation to gourmandise”, a menu dedicated for them, including a starter and a dessert offered by the chef, as well as a half dish or a dish selected from the menu.

After a tour in the cellar of La Côte Saint Jacques, our sommelier will offer you either a traditional or a blind wine tasting. He will comment on the tasting and will give you all the necessary explanations. The tasting is accompanied by cheese puffs and may serve as an appetizer.

To round off the Côte Saint Jacques Spa dedicated to wellness and relaxation, Jean-Michel Lorain opened a "Wellness" restaurant where you can enjoy light, balanced and tasty dishes.
Situated in the Orangerie, close to the Spa, with views of the river, this restaurant boasts a menu entirely dedicated to wellness and to the flavours and aromas of the world. A place where “low in calories” rhymes with gastronomy and tastiness with slimness!

A meal at the Côte Saint Jacques, as at all of the Relais et Châteaux, is a veritable feast. It is important that you take the time to savour every moment of it.
For this purpose, Jean-Michel Lorain offers you two magnificent salons with very different atmospheres where you may decide to comfortably settle in, depending on the weather and on your spur of the moment desire to have a cordial or after-dinner drink, or simply a tea or coffee.
The first of these, very well-lit, opens broadly onto a wide terrace and the gardens. Whether from the inside, or from the outside on sunny days, you will enjoy the lush greenery of the banks of the Yonne.
The second, softer and more intimate, truly inspires relaxation following a gastronomic meal in Burgundy. An impressive selection of Armagnac is displayed by the bar and a library with more than 500 books on cooking and other fine works is at your disposal. You may leaf through them calmly by the fireside.

The Côte Saint-Jacques is situated 13 km from the A6 motorway. Exit 18 in the direction of Joigny, mid-way between Auxerre and Sens. It is approximately 1 1/2 hours from Paris.
From Dijon or Lyon: the hotel is 1 1/2 hours from Dijon and 3 hours from Lyon by the A6. Exit no. 19 Migennes - Joigny at 19 km.
From Belgium, Troyes, Reims or Calais: take the A5 motorway, Sens exit.
From Sens or Auxerre: the Côte Saint-Jacques is 20 minutes from the two cities by the RN 6.
There is an SNCF station in Joigny, only 5 minutes from the Côte Saint-Jacques.
The journey from Paris (Bercy Station) to Joigny takes approximately 1 1/4 hours and there are many trains to Dijon or Lyon.
Depending on availability, the hotel valet will pick you up at the train station and drive you back. Otherwise, the hotel will order a taxi for you.
