HISTORY & CULTURE OF RHODES |
|
|

When the gods divided the world, according to an
ancient myth, Helios (the divinity of the sun) noticed an island emerging from
the sea. He was so fascinated by its beauty that he immediately asked Zeus - the father of all gods - whether he might get this island as his share.
The name of that island was Rhodes. An island that glided, and still glides, like
a dolphin, over the waves in the transparent seas of the south-eastern Aegean
Sea, where the East meets the West. Wreathed in golden beaches, with bright
green hills and valleys, showered by the light of god Helios, it is a place
blessed by gods and favored by nature.
Inhabited already since the prehistoric era, Rhodes quickly developed into an
important financial and cultural centre of the ancient world. Its affluence,
natural beauty and strategic position, endowed the early Rodians with wealth,
always attracting other powers to take possession of the island. The Romans,
the Knights of Saint John, the Byzantines, the Ottoman Turks as well as the
Italians, all left their deep signs of presence, but always failed to sever
the Greek characteristics of the island, which finally joined metropolitan
Greece after the Second World War.
Rhodes today offers the visitor a plethora of all year round leisure alternatives,
covering any type of tourist activity. The natural beauty of the island, the
monuments from its long and often turbulent history, its cosmopolitan character,
as well as the warm hospitality generously offered by the Rodians, and an excellent
tourist infrastructure, are all factors that captivate the visitors. |
