The first Italian Truffle Museum in San Giovanni d'Asso
This museum is the first in Italy, and it was inaugurated on Saturday, November 13, 2004 in San Giovanni d'Asso. Thus, this is the logical foundation for the truffles journey of revelation, which digs deeply into the mythological image of the precious tuber.
San Giovanni d'Asso
The medieval village of S.Giovanni d' Asso rises in the heart of the 'Crete Senesi' and 'white truffle' territory, it can be reached from Sinalunga (exit 'Val di Chiana/Bettolle' of A1) passing through the SS38 across Trequanda/Montisi or from the scenographic route from Siena, passing across Asciano and the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
Located at the top of a hill, overlooking the Asso River valley, this castle is probably to be included amongst the properties belonging to the Imperial Officers, however in the ancient times it was the seat of a rural Etruscan settlement. In 1151 it belonged to Counts Pallonieri di Forteguerra who granted it to the Siena municipality. Following, the castle belonged to the Viscount Ugolino Scalari and the Ardengheschi famili of Civitella.
The old defensive structures around the village, which grew up alongside the castle, have almost completely disappeared, except for a large tower. The Castle is however well preserved and located in the higher part of the town, called 'Borghetto' [Hamlet], its origin dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Ristorante del Castello is located in the oldest part of the building, which once housed an olive press. The most part of the original features of the structure was retained, including the typical architraves in bricks. The kitchen offers its guests the genuine flavours of traditional Tuscan cooking. White and black truffle, pecorino cheese, Senese salami, honey and saffron, are some of typical products used by the chef to prepare special dishes. The menu is periodically renovated with new dishes according to the seasonal products. The wine list includes wine from Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano to satisfy the most refined palate. It is possible to prepare menu for groups, for wedding parties or other special event. In the warmer weather, it is possible to eat outside in the small piazzetta enjoying the atmosphere of the old village, or alternately in the comfort and shade of the back terrace enjoying the Crete Senesi Hills landscape.
